Part 1 – Searching the Wreckage

The heroes continue their quest to recover the missing lore books for a wizard in the City of Golotha, following the trail of a smuggler who was transporting them. They find the wreckage of the smuggler's wagon and slaughtered a bestial, Arthynnod, who was guarding it.

Now, they begin searching through the wreckage, and it looks like they are not the first. They observed that anything obviously valuable had been recently taken, and there were tracks of running individuals leading towards a nearby settlement. However, the looters missed a pair of potions and some bone blades crafted from the legs of some monster. Nearby is the discarded shield bearing Clan Webstal's coat of arms. The Constable of the nearby Phira Keep is Sir Dernik Webstal. The heroes think Sir Dernik’s men must have looted the wagon, possibly been cased off by the Arthynnod.

Part 2 – The Constable of Phira

The barony of Phira is well-ordered and wealthy. The capable Constable Dernik Webstal meets with the party and tells them that his men plunder the wagon. Sir Dernik has placed a bounty on the Arthynnod head and happily pays it.

The books the heroes were looking for were recovered, and Sir Dernik tells them that he passed them on to his brother Viran Artawelmin Webstal, the guildmaster of the Assembly of the Mysteries of Flame, a guildhall of fire magic in the king’s official residence in Shostim.

Part 3 – The Bloodsucking Serpent

The heroes journey to Shostim is hazardous. Laying in little burrows, two snake-like creatures prepare an ambush. The four-eyed Ilfutin, the Bloodsucking Serpent is a rare type of Ivashu that springs out of the ground, attempting to wrap around its targets and feast on its victim's blood. Drinking blood will invigorate them. Unfortuately, for the false snakes, they are spotted and eliminated before they can do any real damage.

Location - Shostim Castle in the Kingdom of Rethem.

Part 4 – The Assembly of the Mysteries of Flame

At Castle Shostim, they visit the guildhall of magic and meet with Sir Dernik’s bother, Viran Artawelmin Webstal. Guildmaster Artawelmin acknowledges receiving the books and will hand them over to the party, but the crafty fire wizard wants a favor first.

By royal decree, two nearby manors support the guildhall and are also used as test grounds for their magical, possibly questionable, battle magic experiments. The guild was researching bombs, and an experiment went a little awry. A bomb filled with Brown Mold has infested one of the farmer’s houses and needs cleaning out. The heroes are annoyed with this pushy wizard's ultimatum but agree to help.

Part 5 – Brown Mold

The farmhouse in question is visibly covered in a brown fungal growth, and the heroes can feel a chill as they approach. “Don’t use fire,” Ash warns the party, Vinzent in particular, as he can manipulate fire magic, “Brown mold feeds on heat.” Ash goes through his bag of tricks and creates a poisonous fungicide that should kill the growth. Coating this onto an arrow shoots the fungus, and with satisfaction notes, it shrivels and starts to die.

Unfortunately, two ice elementals in serpentine form have made a home in the mold and attacked the invaders. Ash is certain these ice elementals are vulnerable to fire, so he asks Vinzent to “Destroy them with fire.” The bard agrees and plays his enchanted bronze flute, shooting out fire from the instrument, turning one of the ice snakes to steam, but some of the heat is absorbed, and the brown fungus alarmingly grows in size, becoming big enough to drain some of the body heat from the heroes. “Don’t use Fire,” Ash shouts to the frustrated Vinzent. Eventually, the second Ice Snake is smashed, and Ash, using his specialist skills, methodically eradicates the mold from the farmhouse.

Viran Artawelmin is delighted with the party’s performance and rewards them with the books as agreed, which have are duly passed on to the Guildhall of Arcane Lore in Golotha (the Hall of Ancient Knowledge). The appreciative scholar Viran Adelrin Lanegrun places a minor enchantment on Ash's custom throwing knife to reward a job well done.

To be continued.
