The Corpse of The Depths

The Origin of the Twisting Dark

Long ago in a time before history, there was a monster, A horid beast whose very existence was a paradox for he was destruction incarnate, the absence of reality personafied. The gods knew the monster only as The Void, and they say that he nearly devoured all of time before the gods vanquished him. But even after his death The Void continues to curse our world. After the gods threw his corpse into the sea the magic of his evil began to bore a hole into the very heart of the world. There the voids corpse still lies; warping and transforming any creature foolish enough to swim into the darkness of his tomb into a blood thirsty vampires.
- A variously flawed account of the Legend of the Corpse of The Depths told by a local salior.
The Corpse of The Depths is one of Na Aragen's oldest and vaguest myths as all but a smallest kernals of truth have long ago faded from memory. Mortals belive it to be a children's story portaying the value of charity and self sacrifce through the the gods vicous battle agianst the devouring Void for the good of the world. Despite mortal misconceptions however, the immortals of Na Aragen consider the myth more of unprovable theory than a legend for it is a very real possiblity that styx's black remians do indeed lie hidden in the impentable dark of The Depths but no God or Demon has ever dared to look for an immortal curropted by the Twisting Dark could too easily become the next coming of the void and with it, the end of time itself.

Historical Basis

Yes... I remember Styx, I remember watching from the tower... watching the earth itself shrivel in her presence, watching the Seraphim fall from the sky one by one! but I saw Styx fall too. Ethinil brought her down with him. It's true I saw Styx die that day though I saw you die too and I know not where her body lies.
- Aeolus, The Daughter of the Wind
Although mortals consider it nothing but a myth and even the Primordials do not remember much or of their battle with her the entity Styx was very real and her power was immeasurable. The Void single handedly destroyed every remnant of the primordial culture and inflicted so much damage on the few survivors that none can recall more than bits and peices of their past. Those that could slipped into madness long ago and cannot be coaxed to reaveal the knowledge they hold. This has left the immortals in a precarious postion through entire ages as they struggled with the knowledge of Styx's existence but no hint as to her location or state of awakening. As such the Gods remained incredibly vigilant for any signed of The Void's return or influence until the day that the Leviathan, Tramerim, rose from The Depths and began terrorizing the realm of Requiem. The monster was immensely powerful, mangaging to destroy the phyiscal forms of both gods and Demons before finally being slain. In the aftermath of the battle there was a unanimous belief that The Void was somehow responsible for the monster's existence but with no sign of Styx herself, the gods agreed that the dark power that surely still festered inside of her corpse was responsible for Tramerim's presence. To go unnoticed for so long, however, meant that the corpse must rest far in the darkness of the water, beyond even Belaron's reach and thus the theory of The Corpse of The Depths was surmised and generally accepted among the immortals, although the gods still keep a keen vigil should their theory be flawed and the void appear somewhere else.

Spread

"You are a fool Nepia, to tell the Humans of such power! If a mortal ever sought the void, if they ever reached The Depths... It could spell the end for all of us."
"What diffrences does it make Grandmother? there is no way a human could travel into The Depths even if they could the Twisting would curropt them long before they found anything. it is an empty promise of power at best. Besides the bards have already morphed the story beyond recontion, there is barely a hint of truth left in it now. We have nothing to fear, and I have nothing better to do than watch the mortals give themselves nightmares thinking about a monster that never existed."
"But it did exist, maybe the monster you have concocted did not, but the horror that inspired you, She was very real... and I would much rather none of them ever knew it"
- Queen Diana, arguing with her granddaughter Nepia, The Goddess of Lies
After the appearence of the first Leviathan appeared in the realm of Requiem both the gods and demons agreed that the theory of the corpse in the Depths should be forever hidden from mortals lest, in their greed for power, they somehow managed to find, or worse awaken, the true remains of The Void and doom the entire world in the process. However, true to her nature it was the goddess Nepia who eventually decided to break her silence and share the myth with the mortal races. Although even she feared to provide them with an honest depction of The Void and ensured that no Human, Elf, GiantDragon, or other race of mortal heart understood the true power Styx once possessed. Despite her caution, however, Diana was still furious with her, and even Amelni could not find any ground to stand on to defend her daughter.
