Borrowed Inspiration
In creating Naiko, the Three Authors (especially Blue) took a lot of inspiration not only from classical fairy and fantasy lore, but also from books & more. Here are some of the most influential sources.
- Disney Neverland Fairies, specifically the chapter books (Gail Carson Levine's Disney Fairies trilogy, 2005-2010, and the Tales of Pixie Hollow series, 2006-2012). This was the primary inspiration for the Fairies and their specialized abilities. (The name of The Everlands is not a variation of Neverland, however. Just a coincidence.)
- Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies (c. 1923). These were the primary inspiration for Flower Fairies.
- Fairy Realm series by Emily Rodda (2001-2006). This was the primary inspiration for Water Sprites and to some extent Flower Fairies among other things, and for a while, the Fairy Realm from this series was considered to canonically exist in Naiko.
- Rainbow Magic series (2003-2018). The jewels from the Jewel Fairy series of the Rainbow Magic books were the inspiration for the day names of the Fairy Calendar(except garnet/ruby and rose quartz), and for a while, the Rainbow Magic world was considered to canonically exist in Naiko.
- Rowan of Rin series by Emily Rodda (1993-2003). Apparently the phrase "Bravest Heart" was borrowed from this series (see The Prophecy of the Seven Kais), and for a while, the kingdoms of Rin and Zebak from the series were considered to canonically exist in Naiko.
- Underland Chronicles (Gregor the Overlander) Suzanne Collins (2003-2007). For a while, giant bugs, giant spiders, and giant rats, as seen in the Underworld Chronicles, were considered to canonically exist in Naiko.
- The Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien (1937-1955). These were the primary inspiration for Elves.
- Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery (1908-1921). The name of Idol-While was taken from the name of Anne and Diana's playhouse, Idlewild.
