Fairy

Making up the majority of the population of two of the Three Kingdoms, fairies are the lead the charge of Good in the battle of Good against Evil. They are one of many humanoid species capable of flight and have their own unique type of naturally-born magic.   Not related to Flower Fairies.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Fairies are highly similar in form to humans, although they are much shorter and slighter. Additionally, they have two pairs of translucent wings on their backs that allow them to fly as easily as they can walk. These wings look similar to a pixie's, but in a fairy, the top two wings curve out and up to a point, as opposed to the Pixies' almond-shaped wings.   Fairies' skin tones can be any of that in the range of a human. However, fairy skin is slightly iridescent and often has a colored undertone.

Genetics and Reproduction

Reproduction works identically to humans. Fairies can reproduce with other fairies, Pixies, Sprites, and Elves.   See Half-Pixie Half-Fairy and Half-Fairy Half-Sprite.

Growth Rate & Stages

Fairies mature slightly faster than humans during childhood and slower once they reach adulthood. The age of adulthood among fairies is generally 16 years. Fairies can live well over 100 years.

Ecology and Habitats

Fairies live best in moderate climates that are more dry, as rain makes them unable to fly, and they do not fare well in extreme temperatures. Fairies are typically very respectful of the habitat that they live in and will not engage in any destructive behaviors toward it, e.g. deforestation.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Fairies are generally herbivorous, though some will occasionally eat fish and seafood depending on their local customs. They both farm and gather, and eat a wide range of plants to maintain a wide and balanced diet.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Fairies prefer to live in groups. The most common social structure is a large village made of many families and independent adults who all work together to take care of the village.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Every fairy is born with a certain magical affinity, or talent. There is a certain list of talents that all fairies fall onto, and no fairy has ever had a different talent, no talent, or multiple talents. A fairy's talent is determined by genetics; that is, a fairy is most likely to inherit one of their parent's talents, or if not, then the talent of an ancestor further back.   These talents all involve manipulation and control over a certain substance or range of substances, and an affinity for interacting with those substances in the natural world. For example, a metal-talent fairy is able to determine the qualities of a metal far more easily than any other talent, and can manipulate it far more easily than others.   There are no recorded cases of a fairy ever losing or changing their talent, or gaining a new one.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Fairies use first names that overlap with human names, a holdover from the days when fairies used to travel to the human world. Fairy last names are either family names that have lasted since the days of fairy-human interaction or names made up or borrowed from other species. There is a distinction between male and female first names.

Major Organizations

The major fairy kingdoms are the The Everlands and the The Emarisa Lands. Most fairies live in one of those two kingdoms, or in the other of the Three Kingdoms, Idol-While.

Average Technological Level

Fairies have a level of technology roughly equivalent with the later Middle Ages of Europe of the human world.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Fairies speak the Common language, shared by the Good species and known by the more elite of the Evil species.

Common Dress Code

All fairies typically dress in robes and dresses, often wearing a legging or short pant underneath to stay modest when flying. Clothing is made of hand- or loom-woven cloth. Shoes, if worn at all, are soft and typically made of a study fabric.   Fairies enjoy embellishing their outfits with accessories, including belts, headpieces, and jewelry, all typically ornately decorated. Fairies will wear clothing of all colors, usually bright or light.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Winterlights is the largest celebration among fairies. Held after sundown on the winter solstice, this traditionally involves a candlelit parade through town and citizens decorating their homes with candles and other lights.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Fairies are strong allies with all Good species — pixies, elves, mermaids, and sprites. They are the closest with Pixies, especially in the kingdom of Idol-While, and mermaids.   Fairies are sworn enemies of the Trolls and other Evil species.
