Planar System

The universe is an amalgamation of many planes that exist in parallel to each other, all lying in the vast space between places that is the Border Ethereal. Each plane may be vastly different than others, ranging in size from smaller than a single room, to massive sprawling worlds that dwarf all others. Many have strange properties dissimilar to how life functions on Nailara, whether it be time that moves at a fraction of the speed, or a lack of gravity.   The plane that Nailara resides on is known as the Prime Material Plane, though there are multiple names for it - Qamar, the Feywild, and the Vast. It is unique among planes for many reasons, but most notably for its size. While there exist many planes that can dwarf Nailara in size and scope, there are none that can encapsulate the vast quantity of stars, planets, and galaxies that make up the material plane. It stretches in a vast expanse that others simply cannot compare to.

What Are Planes?

Planes are realms of existence that take many forms. They are separated from each other by the border ethereal, though this separation may be fuzzy in places - some planes tend to intersect with each other or seep into the border more than others. These intersections can ease travel of magic between the planes, and sometimes even portals stable enough for creatures to pass through.   Planes do not always have to follow the same rules that apply on the material plane - geography can shift in strange ways, magic and be wild and uncontrollable or entirely lacking, and some are so small they could only comfortably fit a handful of occupants. Cataloguing all of the planes of existence is a task that has occupied mages and researchers for nearly as long as mortals have known of them.

Planar Spheres and Conjunctions

When planes are strongly and stably tied to each other, they are said to be in a planar 'sphere' together. The Abyss is one such planar sphere, and a particularly extensive one. It is unclear how many planes exist in the abyssal sphere, but they network together in a close web, allowing relatively easy travel between them. Some planes are only tied to each other under certain circumstances. A planar conjunction is when planes of this sort are at their closest - when they are becoming further separated they are waning, and then they are becoming closer tied they are waxing.   In a general sense, the material plane divides the universe into two halves - the positive sphere, and the negative sphere. It tends to be difficult to travel between the positive and negative spheres directly, and the material plane acts as an intermediary. As a result, the plane is littered with old evidence of planar travelers.

Major, Minor and Demiplanes

It is easy for the layman to misunderstand the terms 'major' and 'minor' to be one that confers importance on the subject. This is not so. Rather, major and minor refer to the number and strength of their connections to other planes. A major plane is one that is very closely tied to a significant number of other planes - as if at the center of a nexus. This allows for more easy planar travel between its connections.   In comparison, minor planes have very few connections to other planes. They tend to be more difficult to travel to, and are often sparsely populated as a result. Demiplanes are a special category of minor planes with no connections whatsoever. They tend to be small, cosmically insignificant, and fleeting in the grand scheme of things. While the destruction of an entire plane of existence is a significant event, demiplanes start to lose coherency at a fairly steady rate.
