Gryphons

The elite flying cavalry unit was made up from veterans of the Bears and Unicorns. The name giving Gryphon was indeed not just a metaphor, but the actual mounts of this unit. Every rider was assigned their own individual Gryphon and task with care and training of the animal.
The death of a Gryphon marked the end of the career of a rider. In the same way a Gryphon was released into freedom if his rider would fall in battle.
