The Shield
The shield is a special place in the maw where the magical energy that fills the crater is repelled using acoustic pillars and angled walls. The Niklin built it to create a dead zone of sorts where they could work on their magical artefacts without interference from the ether. A domed roof covers the upper chamber and a winding staircase leads to a lower level with further rooms. All is in darkness but wall niches lead the priests to believe the Niklin used lamps. They would have to be oil based since magic cannot penetrate the exterior.
No spirit or small god can cross the threshold and it's believed that they don't know the chamber exists.
