In 2003, during her sophomore year of high-school, she began a relationship with her classmate Derek.
Derek's uncle Peter Hale persuaded him that Paige would reject him if she learned he was a werewolf, and the only way for their relationship to survive was for Paige to be turned, and since Talia Hale would never agree to do it, he should ask one of the Alphas who were visiting to discuss ongoing problems with the Argent Clan.
Although initially reluctant, Derek eventually caved, and asked Ennis to turn Paige. However, the bite didn't take.
Knowing that she was dying, Paige asked Derek to kill her, so that her death would be quick, rather than the drawn out agony of the bite poisoning her blood.
Her death was treated as a sacrifice by the Nemeton, and resulted in it having enough power to save Jennifer Blake's life when she was attacked by Kali a few weeks later.
