He was a born werewolf from a small pack in southern California. After meeting and marrying Talia, he changed his name to Hale (rather than Talia taking his name), due to the Hale family's long history and social standing.
When his younger brother James was killed in a car-crash, he and Talia invited his sister-in-law Jenny Loumis and her children to live with them in Beacon Hills, which they accepted.
