Castle Adamant

Castle Adamant is the traditional home of the Duke and Duchess of Adamant, in the Southern Duchy of the Dreibach Empire. It is a well-fortified castle made mostly of limestone brick, with thick walls and high watchtowers.

History

The castle predates the founding of the town of Adamant by at least two decades. It was originally built in the late Y200s as a safe fortification against the unpredictable fey of the Gaeno Woods. As the Vía Titania was built, it became an ideal stop for trading caravans traveling to and from the city of Cantonova.
During the War of Great Sorrow, the entire population of Adamant outside of the castle walls was moved inside. By order of the duke, all able-bodied adults were required to take shifts as archers and guards. In the years of peace that followed, the enormous network of barracks built to facilitate this slowly became used as civilian housing. In Y667, Duchess Amani decreed that this housing would be free to anyone who needed it, so long as at least one able-bodied adult in the household was willing to serve the castle in times of war. Today, at least thirty percent of the population of Adamant lives or works within the castle's walls.
