Cardovic Monarchy
Cardovia is nominally ruled by a monarch. In theory, the monarch has absolute power ruling over the lower nobility, the Nemes. In the past this may have been true. More recently however, since the purging of the pagans in 1398 by the Ametrian church, a new group of individuals slowly began gaining more and more power, taking it away from the Cardovic King. These individuals are known as the Bogati. They originated from the wealthy class of Carpic Bolsh people that owned many of the gold mines along the Bogat hills. These Bogati had been around for as long as Cardovia has, but the purge of 1398 was just the event that the Bogati needed to solidify their power.
The infamous “Wampyr Boyar” Vlossamir Ztanislav holds an iron grip over much of Cardovia. The Ametrian church is expelled almost entirely from the area. Religious figures all over Serrus gather a religious and military force led by the Watchmen to purge the area of Ztanislav’s blasphemy. Many devoted fanatics as well as innocents were killed on the pyres of the church. Ztanislav was never found; his castle empty. Now, the Nemes are few and with little power and the Bogati are the dominant hybrid of burgher and noble. The Nemes are now just wealthy aristocrats content to mind their own business and spend their fortunes, however large or small they may be.
The Ametrian church deemed that to prevent an event like that from ever happening again, a council of these Bogati, now ennobled, would be formed called the Bölcsesség. Since then, the Bogati rule all across Cardovia along with the king. The royalist Nemes attached to the king are in constant political struggle with the Bogati and their supporters. The king rules from his castle in Kraszna, but his actions are scrutinized by the minions of the Bogati. In many cases, the Bogati can and have ignored a ruling by the king.
Some ambitious kings have attempted to forcefully push the Bogati to do his bidding, but as of yet no king dares open conflict; an event that could surely attract the attention of the Ametrian church. The current Cardovic King, Aleksej Dvorkin II, has a healthy respect for the Bogati and typically cooperates with them when asked. This has the traditional Nemes doubtful of his ability to hold on to the throne. Some fear the Bogati will eventually cause the disintegration of the Monarchy altogether.
