Margraten Kanaal
The Margraten Kanaal was built to ensure safe passage of ships and barges into Margraten from northern Frisia. The Verboten Eislandes split the Frisian coast into north and south. These islands are all but impossible to avoid if following the coast and most ships that pass them never make it to their destination. The canal solves this dilemma as it bypasses this dangerous area entirely. It assists with rapid and free flowing trade from the north to Margraten and vice versa.
Architecture
The canal is split by 4 locks spanning from Margraten in the south all the way to the Zaltkruis Inn near Valkenburg. The locks are massive metal and stone gates that close when a ship enters. A series of Elan infused water pumps rises or lowers the water depending on the direction of the ship or barge, then, the onward gate is opened and the ship can continue.
History
The project was funded by many nobles, merchants, and even some Durgol families in 1390 AC. The project took over 100 years to complete and was finally finished in 1501 AC.
