Cormyr

Cormyr is the name given to a series of valleys, plains, mountains, lakes and rivers in central Faerun that were formerly unified under the banner of the kingdom of Cormyr. Of all the kingdoms of Faerun Cormyr is potentially the most tumultuous; or was. The region has always been volatile with competitive city states vying for power and enemies of all kinds on every side. Let’s take a closer look. The capital and former seat of power in Cormyr is no longer, the stronghold of Suvail was raised a hundred years ago. The cities of Proskur, Marsember and Arabel represent the last of the central city states that once bolstered (and often undermined) Cormyr’s armies. To the South Westgate  and Mulhessen to the East still hold power and influence but distance has led to divergent aspirations and interests. When we talk of Cormyr it is these three city states we consider; but more on them later. The kingdom of Cormyr is no more; the inability of the cities to unite under one banner was their demise— unable to fend off the numerous enemies at the gate. To the north the wastelands of Arnauoch spawn foul creatures and ancient armies that pour into Cormyr when it’s northern defences fail. To the south the ravaging cavalry armies of the plains cut off trading routes and raid merchants. The larger better organised cities of the Sea of Fallen Stars to the East pressured Cormyr’s borders and trade supremacy and from within a shadowy cult of dragon worshipers known as the order of the Purple Dragon waged a sectarian war. Cormyr crumbled, and now where it was the cities of Proskur , Marsember  andArabel  operate as independent nations, constantly jostling for prime position on the trade routes that connect the Sword Coast with the East.
