City Plateau Bridgeworks
A series of four massive stone bridges stretching for 10 miles to connect the mile-high City Plateau to the rest of Ostelliach.
The bridges (suspended ramps, really) are gentle-to-moderate grades, with a change in elevation of about 1 foot every 10 feet of bridge. These stretch far enough to bridge the Rivers of Grave & Charity that carve the plateau's height and deposit travelers on the road leading in different directions.
Bridge A
Northwest of the City of Wrath and leading toward the shortest safe road skirting around the Shadowspires mountain range.Bridge B
West of the City of Mercy, depositing travelers on a road taking them safely away from the Fugue Wisps marshlands headed toward Sadora Rowa.Bridge C
Southeast of The Tryst and providing a way to reach the road through Mother's Gift, running alongside the later-built Jona's Wall.Bridge D
Established several hundred years after its predecessors and built directly east of the City of Wrath, providing a route that runs parallel to the Shadowspire mountains as a way to circumvent the growing Arcane Heap (and the massive manmade Jona's Wall blocking passerby from traveling simply south from the City of Wrath's first bridge, A.Purpose / Function
To enable safe, orderly, convenient travel to and from the Cities of Mercy and Wrath and to a lesser extent The Tryst (then known as Fort Avidium).
Alterations
Originally, the bridges were elaborately supported but fairly straightforward rope bridges suspended between stone columns. Over time, the bridges were fixed in more sturdy stone. They have also been widened, had directional lanes introduced, and been lined in some places with Haste Stones. Finally, the addition of Bridge D in 220 AB was completed in order to allow circumnavigating the Arcane Heap and Jona's Wall.
Architecture
The bridges are sturdy cobblestone fixed between tall, magically warded stone pillars. They are divided into two directional lanes, ascending and descending, with greater divides within each for pedestrian and vehicle lanes.
The pedestrian lanes also include mounts such as horses, which are required to travel at a walking pace unless granted special passage to use an "emergency" lane down the middle. The pedestrian lanes are also lined with specially designed Haste Stones, which function akin to moving sidewalks that allow people to move more quickly than their typical travel speed.
Typically, the vehicle lane moves slower and is used for carts and wagons carrying supplies.
Defenses
The bridges are magically warded against damage (accidental or malicious) and are monitored by waystations every mile staffed with guards and golems. There are also rumors that well-trained mages and fighters travel amongst the pedestrians to watch for trouble along the way.
