The Morrigan

(a.k.a. Morrigu, Badb, Macha, Anand)

The Morrigan was a deity brought to power on Feb 20th, 725 in order to rule Pandemonium. Despite her marriage to The Dagda, she was an extremely mysterious figure. She is a shapeshifter, and was therefore depicted in a wide variety of forms, and even multiple names. Even the goddess herself would not always give the same answer when asked for her name, or even for her species.   It is widely believed that her "true" form was that of a massive crow with five eyes. This was interchangeably referred to as either "The Morrigan" or "Morrigu", even by the goddess herself. In this form she is associated with war and fate, visiting battlefields to give her favor and make predictions regarding the outcome with stunning accuracy. She is a kind goddess, however, and has been known to offer her aid to those on the losing side of a conflict, especially if they show bravery or strike fear into the opposition. When deceased soldiers passed through the Astral Plane and arrive in Pandemonium, Morrigu would often personally introduce herself and wash their bloodied clothing.   In yet other times, however, she appeared to split herself into three beings. These individuals would simultaneously profess that they are the same being and also that they are sisters with their own lives and identities. These are sometimes collectively referred to as "The morrigna". These beings were:
  • Badb, a large black-winged humanoid similar to Kenku but with wings constructed of steel blades, was a goddess of war. It is said that she was capable of laying waste to entire armies entirely of her own accord. She frequently traveled the planes, visiting battlefields in search of new warriors for her flock.  She has since been exiled along with Vecna and the plane of Gehenna.
  • Macha, a tall drow woman, spent considerable time with their husband, The Dagda. Like her spouse, she was associated with fertility and agriculture.  She has since been exiled along with Vecna and the plane of Gehenna.
  • Nemain, A black-scaled Yuan-ti, held domain in Pandemonium proper. She was said to drive entire armies insane with the wave of a hand, forcing them to begin assaulting each other. She also wielded considerable prophetic powers, similar to Istus or Natsu, however her predictions were constantly shrouded in inscrutable metaphor.  She was slain during a conflict in Sigil
Despite their recent rise to power, The Morrigan holds considerable sway over mortal realms, especially among soldiers. Almost every mortal military force will have at least one member who insists they have personally been visited by a five-eyed crow, one of the three Morrigna, or even other forms beyond these. Some follow out of respect and others out of fear, and they often tell conflicting stories about their patron, but they all know the name "The Morrigan" and worship using a common symbol, which is a crow in flight. Additionally, there is a song titled "The Morrigan" which her followers will frequently sing when going into battle. The Kenku appear to be responsible for the spread of the song, and so it is theorized (but not proven) that she has struck a deal of some sort with Penguin.
