Moontown

While Dearno has many old, rich, and elegant neighborhoods, there are several poorer sections. Moontown is one of the latter situated along the water where the sewers flow into the bay and the marshes. Tides and winds bring foul smells back over this part of Nochet. Nearly a century ago, Queen Bruva granted land to a small handful of Lunars to establish a Seven Mothers temple by which the neighborhood acquired its current name. With the Opening of the Seas 40 years ago, folk from the Rightarm Islands settled here to work on building and sailing the great triremes. Many worked on Diros Island, shuttling daily by small boat. Others made the thick twine ropes used to rig the ships.

Queen Hendira gave land and homes in Moontown to more folk from the distant Lunar Empire, and then granted special privileges such as the application of crimson dye (whether the rare and prized dye of distant Jubal or the poor quality dye from the red whelk native to the Left Arm Islands) to woolen cloth to the Five Old Houses of Moontown. The New Lunar Temple was Hendira’s great building project and was to be the jewel of her reign. But these efforts incurred the wrath of Inkhand sages and Sarli clansmen, and that anger was unleashed when Queen Samastina took power. Much of Moontown was burned and razed and even the stones of buildings hauled away in the aftermath.
