Old Dearno

Old Dearno is built of stone: solid and very hard to tear down. Most of the buildings, even the great palaces of the Enfranchised Houses, were built of ancient stones recovered from the wreckage of Veskarthan’s Rage and the Adjustment Wars. The buildings are covered in moss, stains, soot, and grime, until they get repainted. Many of these ancient halls have been patched, plastered, repaired, and repainted over and over again.

In ancient days, this formed the Garden of Delaina where the goddess settled the Empty Land Folk, met the Riddling Bird, and planted her poppies. Poppies are found in most gardens here as it is considered bad luck to turn away Delaina’s dreams. Sometimes the Riddle Stone or the Key Stone appears in Old Dearno, though where they appear varies. Usually the Riddling Bird sits upon one of them, but sometimes Eurmal is there instead in one of his guises or the Mouse Queen. Whoever finds it is sure to have a life of adventure, though whether for good or ill depends upon the riddles asked and answered.

The Grandmothers dominate Old Dearno running affairs for both neighborhood and district. The Delaeos, Delainaeo, and Oranaeo Houses comprise the Three Speakers for Old Dearno; while Houses Delainaeo, Oranaeo, Urvarnta, and Rananaeo hold the Four Pillars of Old Dearno and are entrusted with the upkeep of the Green Horse posts.
