Na'Rua
Grandmother Night, She Who Waits
Na'Rua is the eldest koroua according to the shared beliefs of the hakanu, the eldest known ancestor of the hakanu race. Na'Rua is associated with night, her name meaning 'Grandmother Night' or 'Revered Lady Night'.
Hakanu creation stories say that she was the first to emerge from the void, followed closely by Ila'Ra. Their spirits mingled to create to the sacred land of Okaluan and the surrounding seas. As such, she is the spiritual mother of Na'Anu'ko, Ila'Makau and Ila'Kana and other lesser koroua.
Worship
Rituals devoted to Na'Rua occurr only at night and only on nights when the sky is completely obscured by cloud cover or on those rare times during the year when both suns and three moons are below the horizon. These times are holy to Na'Rua and are also seen as particularly dangerous.
Only the most powerful of the tukuoro is able to commune with her, and only rarely is her aid called upon, in times of desperation and danger for the many, such as when the Kahala'i invaded Talani. During that time, witnesses of the manifested spirit storm, Rua’utulhu’i, reported beams of black nothingness lancing from the sky, consuming Kahala'i soldiers by the hundreds. All agree this was the might of Na'Rua.
