Ilyrinan Machine
Beneath the lowest basement of Hagsfall Tower lies a complex made of Ilyrian white stone, at the center of which sits the remains of an ancient magical device, perhaps even older than the Ilyrians themselves.
In the deepest central chamber, there was once a singular agate the size of a person. The gem was wrapped in runic metal bands, and bore a connection to the elemental plane of earth. In the climatic fight with Bergatha, Saleek plunged his blades into the stone, disrupting the flow of energy to the machine, cutting the hag off from her source of power, and setting off a massive earthquake that rose Hagsfall Tower up from under the ground.
Damaged and inactive, the purpose or workings of the device remain unclear. Something in the experience spoke to Diomedea, who found herself understanding more about the facility. She received hints that this machine was not the only one of its type across Sanzeia. Mages from Elow are eager to examine the machine as part of their treaty with Hagsfall.
Purpose / Function
The machine was clearly built for an purpose. While it is unclear who built it or why, it appears that the Ilyrians, like Bergatha, sought to tap into the immense elemental energy of the machine and built a structure to harness that energy. When the machine was damaged, it released a burst of energy that not only raised the tower, but turned miles of swampland into rich fertile soil.
Alterations
Once she found this source of power, Bergatha moved her lair to the location of the machine. While she did not alter the machine itself, she infested the halls and the upper levels of the towers with her foul minions including but not limited to trolls, bullywugs, troglodytes, ogres, and an otyugh (see Chapter 11).
Architecture
The halls were built of smooth, pure, geometric Ilyrian whitestone. The machine itself seems to be even older and built in a much older style, a fusion of stone and metal that seems almost organic in design.
