Kanagi Remingale

Kanagi served as the third Eastwind between S82 and S107.

Personal History

As a young child, Kanagi grew up in Zonyashi, with his three siblings and both parents. His father, Yabuto Remingale, worked for Kansa the Eastwind and the Shudan Shogunate, and Kanagi was exposed to the inner workings of the miltary from a very young age.   In S42 his grandfather, Yakuto Remingale, became ill and Yakuto was assigned to replace him as Daimyo of the Western Province. Kanagi's family moved to West Gale when he was seven, a move he struggled with much more than his older siblings. He spent a lot of time in the home with his mother and learned a great deal about negotiation and mediation.   In S52 Kanagi joined the military under the military, as attacks from Pannoowan tribes were escalating in the west. Kanagi was eager to serve with his older siblings, but Yanoko was transfered to Zonyashi to serve under Kabuto Remingale, and Yanuto was injured during a raid and died shortly after.   Kanagi became jaded with combat and began looking for ways to apply what he had learned from his mother. Where his sister excelled at managing facts and figures, Kanagi discovered that he excelled at managing people and relationships. In time his understanding of the Pannoowan tribes and ability to predict their actions led to him climbing the ranks rather quickly. He took time to visit tribes and listen to their concerns so that he could help work towards peaceful resolutions, and in time the fighting cooled.   By S69 he was freed up to spend more of his time away from the western province and began making frequent trips to visit his sister in Zonyashi. While there he had no friends of his own, but spent time with her and her friends. One in particualr, Uyeda Kasumi, caught his attention. The two became romantically involved during his frequent visits to the city, and in S72 she married him and moved west with him.   During in time in Zonyashi he also visited with Kansa, who respected the way he had handled the conflict in the west and was preparing him to play a larger role. In S82, Kanagi, Uyeda, and their three children moved back to Zonyashi. Kansa stepped down as shogun and named Kanagi the third Eastwind. Kansa served as his consul for the next three years before her death.   After her passing there was some resistance to accept Kanagi as a legitimate ruler. Influential arcane practitioners had been pleased to see a magic user in charge of the country again and did not want someone like Kanagi to follow in Kansa's place. Many of the common people did not respect him because he was not a folk hero in the way that Kansa and Ono the Eastwind were. Despite this, he actually had more leadership experience than either of them, and had been hand picked by Kansa as her replacement. Recognizing this, Ota Amari, High Shield of the Order of Hiega, backed Kanagi and helped him gain general acceptance.   To further solidify stability, he named his sister Yanoko as teh new daimyo of the western province, and was forced to watch his family leave again as she and his younger sister left Zonyashi for West Gale.   As things began to settle down and transition back to a more normal state in Zonyanshi, Kanagi turned his attention to the rest of Shudan. In S88, owing to a lack of recent reports from Hokuya, Kanagi assembled a group of envoys led by his cousin Kurisu Remingale, the eldest son of Kabuto. Kurisu and the other envoys journeyed to the home of Tsuge Hisashi, daimyo of the Eastern Province, to enquire about the matter.   Tsuge explained that some months ago, Hokuya had began reporting a strange illness affecting people stationed there and requested help. Tsuge had sent extra medical supplies, but later reports indicated that the situation had grown worse. Tsuge had then sent a request for help to the temple in Nanganato, but had not yet heard back. Rather than wait any longer, Kurisu journeyed north east to see Hokuya himself. He brought his envoys and a small detachment of Tsuge’s men as well. They arrived to find nearly half of the permanent residents dead, and the other half too sick to keep up with operations or flee for help. They had held out, still waiting for the help Tsuge had promised which never arrived.   Kurisu quarantined the sick, and did what he could to help them without endangering his men more than necessary. When he too started to show signs of sickness he was transported back to Zonyanshi, but miraculously recovered just a few days into the journey before ever reaching the city or receiving treatment. This led to the revelation that inspired Kurisu to investigate the environment around the outpost and the eventual conclusion that the Fade had expanded. It was unclear if this had happened all at once, or gradually over time, but Hokuya’s proximity was the source of the unexplained illness.   In S89 everyone remaining at the outpost was permanently transferred west to recover, and Hokuya was formally abandoned. When Kangagi learned of all that had happened, and that the Fade had been expanding right under the nose of his eastern daimyo without anyone noticing, he dismissed Tsuge Hisashi and installed Kurisu in his place. The Remingale family now held the position of shogun and two of the four daimyos. Rumors spread that it was a ruthless power play, but those in the east were actually very accepting of Kurisu and not overly sad to witness the fall of Tsuge.   At this time Kanagi sent his oldest son, Keikan Remingale, to serve under Kurisu and continue his military education.   In the years that followed, Kanagi served mainly as the head of the military from Zonyanshi. He very rarely left the city, unlike Kansa before him. Kanagi prefered to appoint regents to each of the major cities of Shudan, and let them handle day to day governance. Those regents reported to their respective daimyos, who in turn reported to him. In this way Kanagi was able to focus on large issues better than the previous two shoguns had, but he was never as in touch with the people of Shudan as Ono or Kansa had been.   Around the year S104 Kanagi became sick, and spent less and less time outside of the estate of the shogun. Keikain returned to Zonyanshi and began assuming more and more of his father’s responsibilities over the next three years. When Kanagi passed away in S107, Keikain was already shogun in all but title, as he had been doing the job for the past several months on his own. Some felt passing the title to Keikain was dangerously close to establishing a monarchy, but it was hard to argue that anyone else was more qualified.   Just as she had backed his father, Ota Amari and the temple of Hiega supported Keikain and ensured that the title was passed on without any substantial conflict.
