GR 05: Betrayal at Sea

By all appearances, the original Questing Party had been reassembled by the etheric Teroth Eamarilth. Working together with the Thrau spy Tarect, they set out for the Thrau kingdom on Aitharac to break an alliance between the Thrau and the Witch Evanchoris, whose forces were currently moving west. In actuality, the two were Evanchoris herself and a henchman (ethereally disguised) with a plot to destroy the members of the Questing Party and steal the sword Elnar.   As the adventure began, Grenton had been posing as Markesh, a dryad-oblate from the Fae “Order of the Butterfly.” As the party passed through Onscra, he sought revenge against the High Keeper Alerec, whom he blamed for the death of his mentor, Trolan. Taking Vitrem, the two broke into the Cathedral of Onscra to steal back Grenton’s circle pendant, which Alerec had earlier confiscated. The attempted recovery failed, and the party was forced to flee to the city of Doltrek, whose Lord Warder was not pleased that Doltrek had been implicated in this attempted theft. As a sign of good faith, Grenton offered his crystal mace to the windsteed-rider Catherdrea. The mace was never returned.   After being denied sea passage at Doltrek, the party purchased a ship named Trivec at the Port of Averi, which they intended to sail to Aitharac. While just off the coast, the Witch Evanchoris revealed her plot in an attack on the party. In the battle, Elicia was slain, Vitrem was lost in a timerift, Grenton was rescued by his greyfin cat and Reneslar was nearly killed as he swam to shore. In the final engagement, the Witch shattered the blade of Elnar in two.   OUTSIDE GAME-TIME: The ending of this campaign appeared to have been the end of the original Questing Party. Except in the case of Reneslar, the fate and whereabouts of the characters were left unknown.   MEMORABLE MOMENTS: This was the first attempt to re-unite the high-level characters of GR 1: The Great Quest. It introduced Tom Forliti to the gaming group. The final battle on board the Trivec was one of the longest single encounters and one of the most exciting in game history. The loss of Grenton’s crystal mace during this campaign was complained about by character and player for many years thereafter.
