Martian Technocratic League
The Martian Technocratic League or MTL is a technocratic confederation of Martian states and space colonies. Over 8 billion people are governed by the MTL, with the majority living on its designated homeworld of Mars. It is widely considered to be a galactic superpower.
Government
The MTL is a hyper-capitalist corporatocracy. Its citizens vote to elect members to the nation's board of directors, with votes being proportionally counted based their shareholdings in state-affiliated companies and currency. The MTL's board elects a chairman of the board, who holds significant executive power, while the whole board acts as the sole lawmaking entity for the league. The board is often referred to as the 'corporate council', as in practice a majority of the council consists of prominent CEOs and business executives.Foreign Policy
The MTL's foreign policy has been characterized as imperialist, with the league's diplomatic, military, and economic power often being used to aggressively expand the league, and crush political entities opposed to it. This behavior has been somewhat mitigated by the rise of the Social Republic, which actively uses its influence to block the league's expansion. The MTL formed in 2301 out of a number of independent Martian polities under the protection of the Martian GUSF after the fall of the Global Union in the 23rd century. It became a leading innovator in technological development for some time before falling into a state of technological stagnation in the 25th century.
