Centurion

Legionary Rank

The backbone of the officer corps in the legion is a group known as centurions. Each one commands a century, though ten of the centurions also command their cohorts. There are 59 centurions in a standard legion.   The sub-ranks of centurions are as follows:
  • Primus Pilus - there is but one of these in a legion. They are the commanding centurion of the first century of the first cohort, thus the commander of the entire first cohort. This is the senior centurion in the entire legion.
  • Pilus Prior - with the exception of Cohort I (where the Primus Pilus takes this role), this is the commanding centurion of the first century of a cohort and also commander of cohort at large.
  • Pilus Posterior - commander of the second century of a cohort
  • Princeps Prior - commander of the third century of a cohort
  • Princeps Posterior - commander of the fourth century of a cohort
  • Hastatus Prior - commander of the fifth century of a cohort
  • Hastatus Posterior - commander of the sixth century of a cohort
