Demons
Demons are outsiders of the Lower Realms that are said to originate in the mazelike and constantly morphing pits of the Weirdwyld where unreality and half-devoured nightmares meet as middle grounds between existence and the Abyss.
They derive power, nutrition and satisfaction from the emotional radiation of the sapient inhabitants of the Prime World Disk and often allow themselves to be summoned by them in order to gain more substantial amounts of it.
Demons, like the strange realms they were once born from, many millenia ago, have no truly fixed “natural” form with their default state of being (which is called Hrathforma) often incorporating conflicting, contradicting, incomprehensible or even reality-breaking qualities and attributes. For example a plague demon’s true form may be the sound of the dying breath of a deadly ill person inverted and geometrically arranged on a six dimensional fan of pseudo-sounds, a sensory experience utterly incomprehensible and almost indescribable to most people.
Demons can also take a more fixed shape known as their Aeforma which tends to be more humanoid, reality-conforming and simply comprehensible and which they often utilize to interact with those mortals who summon them.
Demons unlike Devils don’t tend to take this shape unless they believe they absolutely have to and as such have a much harder time maintaining it in a stable manner.
Whereas Devils primarily feed off mortals who attempt to unhealthily restrict, repress or deny their urges, needs or desires demons feed preferably on those who unhealthily indulge or lose control or even themselves in pursuit of their darkest urges.
Demons have personalities much like mortal beings do, they have individual (or in rare cases hiveminded) opinions, plans, goals, likes and dislikes as well as relational connections with other beings be they outsiders or mortals.
Demons, like Devils, do not age nor do they ever die natural deaths. They can suffer starvation though not die from it and even while on the Prime World Disk do not breathe (though they can pretend to do so to keep up a disguise).
When demons or Devils are hurt beyond a point where their metaphysical form breaks apart they are violently ripped from wherever they may be to a specific point located in the deepest pits of the warping horrorspheres of the Weirdwyld where they gradually reform over a variable amount of time with minor demons taking much shorter to reform than more powerful ones. The process of reforming makes a demon lose part of their power and static emotional energy (the emotive equivalent of potential (versus kinetic) energy) which is freed and consumed by the Abyss in a painful instant.
Demons are not truly “born”, all presently existing demons have existed in one shape or another since the beginning of everything but demons can variably split their own power and energy in order to create less powerful beings, most often out of a need for servants or a desire to sire offspring regardless of purpose and have done so since they have existed lending to a very large population of demons all of which can trace their lineage back to a select few prime-beings most of which have given up their original identities to go about their business under less obvious guises. When a demon splits its essence a new consciousness springs forth while the old one remains, albeit in a changed state and in mild “separation pain”.
Demons can also procreate (in a way) with mortal beings by investing a portion of their power and static emotional energy in them which either leads to the equivalent of conception then gestation and ultimately the birth of a demon-blooded infant or instantly transmutes the invested in mortal to be demon-blooded, the latter being a much more power intensive process. Demon and devil blooded humanoids are usually referred to as Nevernost within the City State of Styx with little distinction being made between the only societally and culturally but racially identical factions though the term is much less often applied to mature humanoids who become invested with Infernal power. Though demons can expend or lose power in a variety of way the only way they can gain it is either by hunting or gathering and consuming the flora or fauna of the Lower Realms which is rich in the the emotive radiation of the Prime World Disk or by consuming emotive energy directly from sapient souls (which is much more nourishing and empowering than the former method), as such they spend most of their time doing either or trying to maintain control over a territory that allows the pursuit of either.
Demons are in a constant and eternal state of warfare against Devils, members of the same species who reject the impermanent nature and chaotic urges of demonkind who live in the Thirteen-point-one-two-seven-nine Hells.
In this war demonkind is at a benefit due to its much greater metaphysical prowess and numbers, however this is counterbalanced by the superior technology and strategies employed by the agents and armies of the Princes of Hell.
