The Sewer Rescue

Written by Chrundle_the_Great

General Summary

Two natives to Redgaard, one a street urchin and the other a nobleman-in-hiding, arrive in the Emberwood Village to earn wealth and seek answers. Hired by the Hooded Lanterns to rescue a paladin from amphibious mutants, they join forces with two others, who aim to return the captive to someone else.

Session Notes

  • Rattlecan, animated armor with a knack for hyper-specific insults
    1. Popular among adventurers, "Kick the Can" is a not-so-friendly bar brawl with Rattlecan behind the Bark and Buzzard
  • Kragan and Peter knock out their opponent and impress the other patrons
  • Petra Lang, amiable Hooded Lantern lieutenant and urban ranger
    1. She asks them to clear out the Wastewater Treatment Facility
    2. Also, she offers a personal favor if they rescue the Silver Order knight
  • Their light conversation is interrupted by a large cloaked figure
  • Ansom Lang, prickly Hooded Lantern lieutenant and talented pugilist
    1. Somber, he brings news of three fallen soldiers to his sister
    2. He and Petra disagree about hiring mercenaries vs. training their own
    3. After arguing, he beats up Kragan but buys him a drink afterward
  • The group merges with Eldemir and Sarlen, who have a similar quest
  • They share the following information with each other about the light Haze:
    1. Vision is lightly obscured
    2. Non-magical sunlight is blocked
    3. Corpses do not rot (although they tend to attract mutants)
    4. After 20-24 hours, levels of contamination are a risk every hour
  • Still uncoordinated, the group alerts a cloaked figure atop an old belltower
    1. When the bell is rung, dangerous crawlers swarm from underground
    2. While fleeing, Sarlen is unsettled by the bell-ringer's archery prowess
  • The group finds the dilapidated Eckerman Mill, a "safe," neutral meeting place for adventurers and factions alike
  • Peter hears a familiar voice from his days as an Amethyst Academy student
  • The Grave Order, adventuring party primarily searching for delerium
    1. Lestheris Solderi, sorcerous prodigy who was expelled from the Amethyst Academy for practicing necromancy
    2. Halorin Yandres, armored undead warrior and Lestheris's bodyguard
    3. Jedar Pike, eerily quiet blood-mage or cleric of undeath
    4. Mycene, tiefling with splotches of amber mold growing from her skin
    5. The Horror, massive skeletal creature and Lestheris's masterpiece
  • The group pays the mutated ferryman and crosses the contaminated river
  • "Hoppers" patrol the Wastewater Treatment Facility in ramshackle canoes
  • The group successfully sneaks past the mutants and infiltrates the sewers
  • Badly injured, they narrowly escape blood barnacles and a gelatinous cube, which operate in a deadly symbiosis
  • The group runs into a rusted iron portcullis, and the hoppers spot them
  • The Duchess's Champion, very muscular hopper warrior, also known as Grog
    1. With a fanatical look in his eyes, he demands tribute for his Duchess
    2. Insulted by the group's offering, Grog readies his weapons
  • The Prophet, speaker for the Duchess and a sly manipulator
    1. In exchange for releasing the Silver Order knight, the group will leave and convince the guilds not to further pursue the sewers
    2. The Prophet leaves to discuss this matter with the Duchess
    3. Eldemir and Sarlen see the control gem embedded in his staff
  • While sparring, Kragan accidentally challenges Grog by striking his face
  • The group are allowed to rest in the prison cells before the duel
  • Sir Euclid the Nonbeliever, practical knight and sole survivor of his regiment
    1. Eyes turning purple, he tries to remain calm to avoid mutating
    2. Also, he offers advice for the upcoming battle
  • The group battles Grog on lily pads, contaminated water sloshing below
    1. He wields a huge maul, bellows thunderously, and shotputs his minions
    2. As more of Grog's blood is spilt, he becomes more and more enraged
  • Finally, Kragan cleaves into Grog's chest with a blade of lightning
  • The group convinces him of his superior strength, in front of all the hoppers
    1. Now the People's Champion, grateful Grog promises the group a favor
    2. Also, he gifts his maul to Kragan for striking him down
  • With Euclid in tow, the group crosses through the city's southern district
  • Manticores laugh and immoblize the group with tail spikes through the feet
    1. "Away! Away! The Consort wishes to inspect the trophies..."
  • The Consort, contaminated manticore with delerium embedded in its arms and bloody adventurers' corpses decorating its body
    1. "You, especially [Eldemir], will be excellent offerings to the Countess."
    2. It summons an eldritch hailstorm and chases the fleeing group
  • The group miraculously resist the Consort's contaminating strikes and spells
  • Eldemir sees a falling delerium shard and hears a voice in the wind
    1. "Seek shelter, my servant."
  • The group fall into a tunnel and follow an stranger to safety
  • Domu, orc bandit with a large star-nosed mole companion
    1. He invites the group to seek him out at the nearby Hanging Tree Tavern
  • They return to the Emberwood Village, Euclid's fate still undecided
