Darja

Darja

A Dejy twilight Cleric coming from Tygasha, his mother comes from the disgraced noble family Remel.   Darja was born in late 552, one of several children of a Dejy father, Nyrash of Shyta-Thybaj, a prosperous silk merchant, and a Kalamaran mother, Lisanara Remel, a noblewoman originally from Pekal. Indulged by his parents, Darja lived the high-spirited life typical of a wealthy young man in Shyta-Thybaj. As a youth, Darja became a devotee of skalds and was fascinated with all things Fhokki. He was handsome, witty, gallant, and delighted in fine clothes. He spent money lavishly. Despite his bright clothing, rich friends, and love of pleasures, his displays of disillusionment toward the world that surrounded him came fairly early in his life.   Around 570, his best friend Roshani joined a mercenary company in Bet Bireli. This event caused Darja to re-evaluate his life. He left for Bet Bireli to enlist in the same company, but a strange dream made him return to Shyta-Thybaj and lose interest in the worldly life. He began to avoid the sports and feasts of his former companions. A friend asked him whether he was thinking of marrying, to which he answered: "Yes, a fairer bride than any of you have ever seen", meaning Yendaj, the Coddler.   On a pilgrimage to Thygasha, Darja joined the Dream Weavers as an acolyte. He spent some time in lonely places, asking Yendaj for spiritual enlightenment. He said he had a mystical vision of the Coddler in a forsaken country chapel, just outside Thygasha, in which the Icon of Yendaj said to him, "Darja, go and repair My church which, as you can see, is falling into ruins." He took this to mean the ruined temple in which he was presently praying, and so he sold his remaining goods to assist the priest there. When the priest refused to use the gains to repair the temple, an indignant Darja stole the food and wine offered for the Festival of the Cat to indulge his old vices.   In order to avoid the Dream Weavers' wrath, Darja hid in a cave near Thygasha for about a month. When he returned to town, hungry and dirty, he was dragged to the temple by the priesthood, beaten, bound, and locked in a small storeroom. Freed by his mentor Koda, Darja returned at once to the wilds. For the next couple of months, he wandered as a beggar in the hills behind Thygasha. He spent some time at a neighbouring monastery working as a scullion. Returning to Thygasha, Darja traversed the city begging stones for the restoration of the ruined temple. These he carried to the old chapel, set in place himself, and so at length rebuilt it. Impressed by his devotion, Koda gave him, as an alms, the cloak, blessed sand, and halberd of a Dream Weaver.   Over the course of two years, Darja fully embraced the life of an hermit. He realized how the daily sacrifice of silver pieces was meaningless to the Coddler, as he did not lost the goddess' favor during his seclusion in complete poverty. Perhaps Darja misunderstood Yendaj when she asked him to repair her church. So he left the hills of Thygasha to find enlightment and share it to the world.
