Bugbears are a massive humanoid race related to, but larger and stronger than, goblins and hobgoblins. Like many goblinoids, bugbears speak the Goblin language. Bugbears resemble hairy, feral goblins standing 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall. They took their name from their noses and claws, which were similar to those of bears. Their claws are not long and sharp enough to be used as weapons, so bugbears often armored and armed themselves with a variety of purloined gear. Most often, this gear is second-rate and in poor repair. Many bugbears are chaotic evil in alignment, favoring stealth and surprising their opponents. They tend to work with other goblinoid races and thanks to their sheer strength, they are able to overpower them and become the leaders of their tribes, only losing by numbers.
Their history continues on from the fate of the
Goblin race. Some tribes were sent to
Venland, a dark and harsh land filled with monsters. These lands didn't have easy pickings, making the goblins fall in numbers rapidly, only those strong and tough would survive. Over the millennia there, only the bugbears remained. Some historians speculate that this simple explanation might not be fully true as it would not explain such different, like between hobgoblins and goblins. It is speculated that the strong goblins that survived lived near a
Foundation Pillar and its energies transformed the goblins by the end of the
Second Age, Godswar. The Bugbears were able to find new lands in the
Third Age, Kingdoms, spread all around. Unlike their hobgoblin brethren, the bugbears never sought to become civilized thus they never advanced beyond tribes, even in Venland.
On Tethys
Great warriors of the goblinoid race, almost always becoming the leaders of their tribes. The Bugbears seek treasure and food, with their size they can get it either by pillaging villages or taking it from weaker members of their tribe. They never had nor have anything beyond small villages to their name and they rarely seek work as adventurers. Some might become mercenaries, if they can pay them in human or elf flesh.
First World
It is unknown how the Bugbear race was created in the
First World. It is theorized that they must have been an experiment like their hobgoblin and goblin brethren that revolted against their creator.
