The Docks of Heraldsport

The docks of HERALDSPORT creak, rattle and shiver with the influx of trade from around the lake being shifted from wood pilings to wooden decks or in the opposite direction. Like most dock shores, the many boats and mystifying density of docks, walkways and pulley hoists constructed haphazardly causes the detritus and run-off of the district to flow into the shore waters and then never leave. The water is filmy enough it appears to be able to defend against rocks and the many ‘articles’ floating in and out from under the docks is disturbing enough before an unseen predator rises from inky brown swirls of water and snatches it from sight.

The DOCKSWARD has been built up over ten decades by individuals and ambitions that inspired the worst-constructed, poorly-maintained infrastructure that permeates this ward. That sucking sound is the saturated muck of the shore, reinforced by gravel and refuse, attempting to lay claim to someone’s footwear. On a normal day, the crap-brown color is assisted by the consistency of the ground walked upon to make the most stalwart soul cringe at each sucking yank and pull to free themselves. There are hand-written street signs though they can change regularly depending on nearby folks and their moods. The ‘streets’ meander here and there, starting and stopping only when a poorly-planned structure is raised up overnight.

Infrastructure

The only place where true substrate and slabs replace the muck is in the far west and far east along the shores of LAKE DAEN—prime docks and warehouses watched over by the grim stone of TOWERGRAVE and TOWER SWORNSTEEL. The cleaned up areas in the west, near the fort and center of the city, are for both freight and passengers—the majority of well-attired and pursed individuals book passage away from Heraldsport through there.

To the east, there are only quieter docks that are used by the more affluent or at least established commerce concerns. With matching warehouses nearby, the eastern side of the dockfront is not the kind of place where an outsider or a vagrant want to be caught. The security hired by these outfits is not composed of complete thuggish idiots though they do tend to predominate their environment. But that security comes with an added perk, the attention and diligence of any Watch member, the threat of thief-finders and repo men right up-close-and-personal. The security in the east but it does not seem to track with the western docks—until a closer look reveals the cover and threat index issued by the individuals on the walls of Heraldsfort.
