Richard Handcock

The Haunted Captain Richard Handcock (a.k.a. Dick)

What can I say, our captain was always a Dick! Haha... too soon?
-Daniel Canaan
The captain of the S.S. Pumpernickel, Richard "Dick" Handcock was a moderately respected member of one of Seaview's many fishing guilds. In his later years, he grew a bushy gray beard and was more than willing to share a bottle o' beer or to assist in some wild plot.

The Faithful Day

Despite the warnings and worries of his crew, especially that of his first mate, Richard pushed on to travel into the restricted waters to see if he could find any rare-finned friends to share with the guild. What he caught that day was severe grief and guilt as his crew's worries were made fair. The Devil's Child was displeased with uninvited guests in his territory, heavily damaging the Pumpernickel and killing the majority of the crew, including the first mate. Richard survived and was arrested by the Requian Navy.

Waerytomb Prison

Richard drowned himself in smuggled booze while in prison, the only way to bury the ghost of his first mate into the back of his mind. It wasn't until the beginning of Campaign 2: Sea of Storms in which Richard left this blurry haze of prison life. His fellow party members convinced him to help them escape the prison and start their adventure, promising to help him get his revenge.

Revenge of the Revenants

The party of Tempest's End learned of a Lich by the name of Lucivious who was studying the Devil's Child and was cloning the monstrosity, creating creature's such as his friend Daneil's pet land-shark Bubbles. They make a deal: the party would slay the Devil's Child and give Lucivious a powerful statue that slept in its belly, and in return, she'll give them all her research on it, its weaknesses, and strengths. The deal was made and they began to prepare.   Their preparation led to an underwater ruin that was once a temple of Thernet, the youngest brother of the Rain Twins. In its vault was a shield that belonged to Thernet's champion. When donning it, Richard was asked to be Thernet's champion, which he at first denied but was given the opportunity to change his mind later, when he needed to.   After stealing some supplies from a warehouse, Richard's old crew possessed several Requian Navy members and tried to kill him before he could get his new crew killed in the very ship and by the very same creature that killed them. Richard evaded them, watching them walk into the water as he sailed away.

Rematch With The Devil

The battle started after a brief moment of peace and silence. A storm cloud loomed, creating droplets of coppery rain that made the lightning all the more deadlier. The Devil's Child wasn't alone either, as on its back was a ginormous parasite communicating with the party telepathically. Richard climbed on top of the monstrosity's shoulder, striking the parasite off its back. The Devil was thrown into a pain-fueled rage and tore the S.S. Pumpernickel apart. Alcyone sprung into action, casting her astral magic to allow the crew to not be able to fall into the water, though the rough waves that day put them out of commission for the rest of the battle's duration. Richard, while fighting the beast underwater, couldn't find his pair of artificial guilds and began to rush for solutions or a quick way to end the combat. This led to his demise, his body sinking to the bottom of the sea.   That was when Thernet asked him again, and this time Richard agreed. In an eerie vision, Thernet's old champion, an elf of pinkish complexion, hands off his shield to Richard. He then awakes, nearly a hundred hands pushing him up toward the surface as wooden planks joined together around him. When he breached the surface he was on the S.S. Pumpernickel again, this time as a ghost ship. With the combined effort of Tempest's End and Richard's old crew, the Devil's Child becomes weakened enough for Richard to summon the true power of his shield and liquefy the Devil's Child against a wave created by the great sound emitted by the bashing of the shield.   Though he had the chance to return to the land of the living, he refused, giving his position of captain to Daniel Canaan and setting off into eternity with his crew aboard the S.S. Pumpernickel. One of his new crew, Genevieve Alard (who had previously shown how much trouble she had getting along with the party), admitted she was the one who stole Richard's artificial gills and that she tried to get him killed. Daniel's first order as captain was to execute the traitor. Finally, Lucvious magically massaged Tempet's End revealing her true intentions, she wanted to test the strength of the Devil's Child before permanently polymorphing herself into it. She also admitted to sabotaging the party by delivering false information on the monstrosity- and the party broke both their deal and communication with her.
