The Lega Latina (or as it is known in the English speaking world, the Latin League) is an Empire in all but name in the realm of Earth Baroque. It occupies much of the lands that on Earth Zero and more closely related realms, are known as Italy, Spain and Portugal, together with some more limited territories north of the Alps. It has extensive borders with its great rival the Anglo-Franco Empire to the north. Queen Allesa de Medici is the current ruler of the League, a widow who is actively reviewing the political and personal prospects of a number of suitors. The Lega Latina, may not be quite as powerful as the Anglo-Franco Empire but it can call on the armies of many dukes and princes. A recent festival lasting for the whole month of June, called the Great Roman Muster, assembled some representitive forces in a show of military pride designed to impress the populace and the enemies of the League with their capabilities.

The Muster was an opportunity for politics as well as for the display of fine regiments and aristocratic prowess. Beyond the showmanship, there was a serious purpose to the gathering. The senior generals of the League were able to review some of their more capable companies and to conduct miliary excercises to test and improve their co-ordination.

The Queen paid special attention to the Roman Muster, working with her advisors to ensure that the operation of the different armies under her command met with the highest standards and acting to replace or sideline leaders who she felt were either not up to the task or were not acting in her best interests.

You can be sure that spies from the Anglo-Franco Empire were taking careful note of the events that played out at the Muster so that King Matthew II was kept closely informed.

In the distant past, there have been clashes in the Balkan regions between these two powers, but at present Neo Byzantium is more interested in the eastern frontier. Buffer states (primarily Greater Bavaria) prevent these powers from coming into direct conflict.

The Empire would like to have a land port in the Mediterranean and has attempted to conquer the Provence region to achieve this. The League needs the relatively narrow strip of land on the coast to unite its western and eastern territory.
