New Character Guide

Welcome to the High Seas! You'll find everything you need to know about the world in this wiki (click here or on the button in the top left to go back to the homepage) and should feel free to explore at any time, including once the campaign starts!   Since a full wiki of things to read is a bit daunting, this page serves a good place to start so you don't miss anything crucial and can enjoy/trudge through the rest at your leisure.

First off, the map

The High Seas world map
As you can see, there are several pins on the map that can be clicked for an overview of the major locations - which can also be found from the navigation on the home page. The major nations with their primary ports are labelled on the map, and more pins and labels will appear as time goes on.

Second, the timeline

No need to get into the nitty gritty of this, but a quick browse to familiarise yourself with the major world events is probably worth your time: An Overview of Major World Events. The timeline uses the Taranthian calendar, which begins the new year on the first day of summer:
  1. Burninglight
  2. Waningsun
  3. Fallingleaf
  4. Brokenbranch
  5. FirstChill
  6. Morningfrost
  7. Silentfield
  8. Beginningthaw
  9. Firstshoot
  10. Flowerbloom
  11. Warmbreeze
  12. Longeve

The major changes

There's a few major things that will shape the campaign. Several are summed up in the Magic and Black Magic article, which explains the current state of "low to no" magic in the world. Further elaboration on the religious side can be found in the Deities, Myths and Legends pages. In terms of technology, you can find the rules for new weapons and items (yes, this is where you can find the pistol stats) in the Items, Equipment, Weapons and Armor article, and find out about cannons and ships in the Ship types article.

For character creation

Now that you've gotten familiar with the world, you might be interested in some of the specifics relevant for character creation. You'll find plenty of homebrew to check out in the homebrew pages, including new classes and subclasses, feats, and backgrounds. Almost all of the races (now renamed Cultures as they are functionally more similar to the Adventures in Middle Earth) are tweaked or homebrewed in some way, so make sure to use these stats instead of the official material. Finally, you'll need to know your Ship Role if you're taking one - though that should really be part of a group decision!   Stat arrays to choose from:
6 10 11 15 15 17
9 12 13 13 13 15
9 10 11 12 12 14
9 12 13 15 15 17
7 10 13 13 13 16
11 12 14 15 15 16
    Checklist:
  • Have I picked one of the cultures listed on this wiki?
  • Does the class I've picked have spellcasting, and if it does have we looked into making it work?
  • Have I got a character sheet on worldanvil set up?
  • Have I checked the new backgrounds, Items, Equipment, Weapons and Armor, and Feats to make sure I've not missed anything?
  • Have I picked a Ship Role, if wanted?
  • Have I picked languages that fit the campaign?
  • Have I familiarised myself with the ship and cannon rules in the Ship types article?
