Uisgneach

Uisgneach is an inhabited island in the northern portion of the Eileanan an Iar. While it is historically a part of Dyfed, it has been held by the forces of Jarl Gunnar Bloodaxe and his Eyjamaður raiders for the last two years. Dyfed's attempts to reclaim the island have been fruitless so far, but there a persistent rumors that they are planning a major push to drive Bloodaxe out.    The largest settlement and only siginficant port on the island is Porth Mynach. Bloodaxe has made his headquarters here, although he is rarely in residence as he prefers to lead his raiders personally. Once it was a quiet fishing village, but since Bloodaxe siezed control of the island, the traffic has increased enormously, especially with many ships coming back and forth from the Kingdom of Suðya. There is also a small village of Dòbhran Selkies at the northernmost tip of the island named Creag Ghoiri, which means 'Boiling Rock' in Eileanach - it is named for the way the sea resembles boiling water among the rocks near the village.   The population of Uisgneach is evenly split between Albannach and Ynyswr peoples, and many families on the island can claim ancestors from both groups. Ynyswr is the more commonly used language, but Eileanach is also known by a large portion of the populace.

Notable Spirits

The best known spirits are actually from the nearby island of Krákuhólmi, which is connected to Uisgneach by a causeway that becomes passable at low tide. Krákuhólmi is a notoriously haunted islet which was used as a site to execute pirates for centuries, and Bloodaxe has continued the tradition of gibbeting prisoners on the rocks there.    On Uisgeneach itself, the most prominent spirit is Ceasg, who embodies the waters on and around the island. She appears as a beautiful woman with the tail of a salmon instead of legs. She is honored in several celebrations during the year, and is traditionally offered a lamb at Midsummer each year, which is cast into the River Chaill to be swallowed whole by the goddess. It is said that if this sacrifice is ever neglected, Ceasg will claim a child for each loch and river on Uisgeneach.

Geography

The island is about 7 miles north to south, and 4.5 miles east to west. There are several small lochs on the island, and it is criss-crossed with small streams, the largest of which is the River Chaill. Aon Hill is the highest point on the island, and is located in the northern portion. The rest of the island is primarily the low-lying grassy plains known as Machair.

Ecosystem

The island is a haven to many varieties of birds, including golden eagles, spotted owls, and the elusive corncrake. Kelp grows abundantly in the waters around the island, and has long been a part of the local cuisine. There are not many large animals who live on the island, and the soil makes it difficult to keep much livestock - the small herds must all share some pasture ground around Aon Hill, for those who live only on the Machair grasses grow ill. The Machair can support agriculture, but only some crops flourish there, mostly certain varieties of rye and oats. The lochs and rivers are teeming with fish, and the beachs and coastal waters are also very fruitful.

Climate

Uisgneach has a chilly climate, with cold currents from the north keeping it cooler than other locations at its latitude. Summers are warm, but the fall and winter seasons are foggy and frigid. Storms frequently strike during colder months, and those that come out of The Middlesea can carry unusual suprises, most often fish or frogs.

Natural Resources

The most important resources the island has is the abundant fish in the waters on and around the island.
