Eilean Mòr (ˈeɪ.lə.n mo:ɾ)

Eilean Mòr is one of the largest islands in the Ynys Archipelago. It is located off the northern coast of Oileán Fiáin and is a part of the Kingdom of Dalriada. Eilean Mòr boasts breathtaking cliffs, secluded coves, and windswept moors.   The largest settlement on the island is Tobar Fuar. The population of the island is primarily Albannach, with substantial numbers of Fir Fáinne and a small population of Dòbhran Selkies that mostly live in the southwestern region of the island, under the protection of the Deep Court of the Fae. The island is best known for its many distilleries, and whiskey from Eilean Mòr is respected all around the Great Ring.

Notable Spirits

Like the rest of Dalriada, the island is under the purview of the Deep Court of the Fae, and the local spirits owe their allegience to the Queen under the Sea. Eilean Mòr is particularly given over to the Queen's herd of Kelpies, who roam the shores at will. The islanders know not to approach any stray horse on the island, and will instead leave out offerings to appease the beasts, typically oats soaked in saltwater, whiskey, or blood.    Inland, the most important spirit is known as the Dòideag. She is the goddess of Ben Mhòr, the mountain that exists in the center of the island. She is said to be a hag that has the power to control the weather and to create earthquakes.

Geography

Eilean Mòr is of ancient volcanic origin. The peak of Ben Mhòr is long extinct, but still dominates the geography of the island. The coastline of the island is made up of a number of penisulas that radiate away from the center. The mountain is heavily wooded, and the lowlands are primarily moorland. Numerous islands lie off the north and western shores of Eilean Mòr, inluding the inhabited islands of Fhéidh, Muck, and Lhean. To the southeast lie the Carraig Toirneach, a large shoal of reefs, islets, and skerries, covering approximately 15 square miles. This area is extremely hazardous to ships, and the Earraid lighthouse was built there to warn sailors away.

Ecosystem

The island has a thriving ecosystem, with many species of plant and animal living there. One notable example is the Eilean Otter, which is considered sacred by the Deep Court. Populations of these animals thrive all around the island, and local sailors take great care not to disturb them in any way. It is said that some of the Deep Fae will take the shape of an otter to play with the animals, and will punish any who molest them.
