Grand Kingdom of Midrasus

Every 50 years a vote is held to elect the new King or Queen of the Nation. Only wood elves over the age of 100, with a lineage proved to be of pure wood elf decent for a minimum of 4 generations can participate in the voting. Any wood elf 5 centuries or older can be voted as Mihael, however nominations are done by the regional leaders of the Kingdom, making a candidate outside of themselves unlikely.

Structure

The Grand Kingdom's power structure can be thought of as a pyramid with 3 layers and 5 sections. At the top of the pyramid is the Mihael. The Mihael has full authority with the nation. They can declare war, promote or demote Haels, and make new laws.   The middle layer of the pyramid, below the Mihael, is divided in two. On one side are the Haels, on the other are the numerous Laharin families. The Haels have little to no authority over their fellow Laharins, instead controlling the lands and non-Elves living on it.   The bottom layer contains 2 sections. One section is the non-Laharin Elves and Half-Elves. They have fewer rights than Laharin Elves, but are not under the control of the Haels. The other group contains all the races that live in the kingdom. They are entirely under the control of the Hael of the area they live in.   Every fifty years, an election is held for the office of Mihael. In the first stage of the election, the Haels nominate a minimum of three Laharin Elves over the age of 500 years. Once this phase has been completed, all Elves over 100 years of age vote. Each Laharin Elf gives one vote to the nominee they wish to rule. The nominee who garners the most votes is then brought to Midr where they await until their rule is blessed by Laha-Milael during their trance. After the this blessing, they can begin their rule.   The elected monarch is called the Mihael (a unisex term for Grand ruler in Elvish). Subservient to the monarch are the various Haels (also a unisex term in elvish, meaning ruler) of the region. After the lords and ladies, there are few other categories of Elves. The monarchs rule over the nation is absolute, but the regional lords have no real power over their subjects. They can pass laws that govern the land that they have been given, but the only recourse to not following these laws is banishment from that particular region. If the elves that live in the lord or lady's region believe they are doing a good job, they give them gifts, for wood elves, in particular, understand little of the concept of money and taxes.

Demography and Population

The majority of the people living in the lands claimed by the Kingdom of Midrasus are Northrin Humans who have lived in the region for hundreds if not thousands of years. Only about a third of the population are Elves, the majority of whom are Laharin. Only Laharin Elves can vote and non-Elves are restricted from leaving lands controlled by a particular Hael and have no legal rights.

Territories

The Grand Kingdom of Midrasus considers all the land from the edge of the Great North Forest to the Midr River to be under its domain.

Military

When the time comes to do battle, the Haels conscript as many Humans, Halflings, and others from their domains as they please and request the services of the Elven  families in their region. The elves are in no way compelled to answer this call and often only do so if the war at hand is with the Hobgoblins of the north.

Religion

The elves of Midrasus hold The Elven Faith shared by all the elves of the world and, as Laharin Elves, they worship Laha-Milael above the other deities of the religion. Some Humans of the land have started to worship the Elven gods, with particular reverence for the minor deities known as Laels. Most, however, continue in the worship of their old dieties and worship where it's permitted by their local Hael.

Foreign Relations

The Grand Kingdom of Midrasus has been at war with the Goblinoids of the Great North Forest on and off since the Years of Blood. As the elves were pushed southwards and out of the forest, they began annexing the northernmost Human kingdoms. Occasion conflicts occur between the Elves of Midrasus and the Humans both inside and outside of the Kingdom.

The Elves of the Grand Kingdom have no official currency and in fact, don't often use the system of coinage used by other nations.
Legislative Body
The Mihael is the writer and passer of laws in the Kingdom of Midrasus. Any and all laws can be overturned by a new Mihael or by a 2/3rds majority of the regional Haels, however these votes can only be called when all Haels are in Midr.
Judicial Body
Within a region, the Hael is the ultimate autority, though even their power is weak.  An Elf summoned to court by the Hael is under no obligation to come.  At any point, a Hael can banish an Elf from their region.  When it comes to non-Elves, the Hael has control of their life, death, and everything in between.  In some regions, they are treated almost equal to Elves while in others they are treated more like cattle, dogs, or pests to be controlled or culled on a whim.
