Creating an Adventurer (Fifth Edition)

A step-by-step guide to character creation in the Akregian Empire, including races, classes, and backgrounds.

1. Races of the Empire

Though humanity comprises the majority of imperial citizens, they are by no means the only people that produces adventurers. The empire holds a menagerie of races, each with its own culture and history. Below is a sample of the more common races to walk the face of Vecrona, and a brief explanation of the niche they occupy.

Common Races

These are among the most numerous races to walk the face of the empire, whether from wanderlust or exile.

Dwarves

Though not citizens of the empire proper, the dwarves are an ever-present aspect of imperial society. Hailing from the Dragon Peaks in the east, dwarves are of two primary clans, the Goldbrand and the Stormjaw.

Goldbrand Dwarves

The Goldbrand clan are merchants by trade, carrying goods and dwarven coin from their mountain cities down into the empire and sometimes further south to the Desert Wastes. Goldbrand dwarves use the statistics of hill dwarves.

Stormjaw Dwarves

The Stormjaw clan are infamously reclusive; their cities are closed off to outsiders, even other clans of dwarves. They are expert craftsmen, renowned even in the lands far to the south of the empire. Stormjaw dwarves use the statistics of mountain dwarves.

Elf-Blooded

When the Celestials and their sylvan servants were banished from the shores of Vecrona, some elven families remained behind and intermarried with the akregian humans. Though legally considered to be human, the various elf-blooded families are nearly a world apart from the other citizens of the empire.

Paladin

Those who dedicate their life and heart to a cause are in no short supply in Vecrona.

Oath of the Ancients

Green knights, as they are called, guard the wild areas between civilization against those who would despoil it, from over-industrious foresters and miners to more primordial evils. Unlike most orders of paladins, the green knights have no direct loyalty to the Akregian Church, though their goals frequently align.

Oath of the Wyrm

Dragon Knights are dedicated to upholding the will of the Dragon Gods and, by extension, that of the Church. Often called drakonauts in the eastern territories, these paladins specialize in mounted combat (both on the ground and in the skies) and act as ambassadors and representatives of the Church to foreign dignitaries.
