Fish Knack
A fish knack is a souvenier item created by the drow woman Sindy Tidepusher of Saltmarsh.
Fish knacks vary greatly in size, shape, and design, but they all consist of a dead, magically-preserved fish, dressed up and manipulated to look like characters or job descriptions. For instance, a fish knack may be designed to resemble a luchador, a member of the Neverwinter Guard, or even depict a battle scene.
History
Fish knacks were created by Sindy Tidepusher in the mid-1400s in Saltmarsh to exploit what she saw as a potential market in the various trade ships that came to Saltmarsh. However, her fish knacks were not very popular at all, as most people didn't seem to "get" them and were perhaps put off by their drow creator, and Sindy supplemented her income with potion crafting for decades.
In 1496, each of the members of the Heroes of Saltmarsh met Sindy during the Banesmark Crisis. Originally, the Heroes only used her potion-crafting services, but, charmed by the unique knick knacks, began buying fish knacks quite frequently, giving them to friends and family and colleting the fish knacks themselves. The involvement of the Heroes prompted Sindy to advertize her fish knacks as "Hero of Saltmarsh approved," especially following Mogran Oredelver and Lyra signing away the rights to their likeness before the Battle of the Spire.
Following the Banesmark Crisis, Micah Pierce, one of the Heroes, began working for Sindy in the first decade of the 1500s, helping to expand her business from Waterdeep to Neverwinter, where fish knacks grew increasingly more popular.
Though nearly all fish knacks were originally created by fish caught by Sindy's husband, Aliford Tidepusher, following his death 1501, Sindy began buying fish from Sizzabiz, the pseudodragon owner of a small fishing trawling company.
