Grand Shade

The Grand Shade is the title bestowed upon the leader of the Twilight Monastery.   Once an individual is selected to become a Grand Shade, their birth name is often dropped, and they are solely referred to by their title.

Duties

The Grand Shade was responsible for running the Twilight Monastery, and their instructions were perceived by their followers to be the orders of the god Mask themselves. The Grand Shade also oversaw the appointment of the lesser Shades.

History

The Grand Shade has been the title bestowed upon the leader of the Twilight Monastery since its inception.   The most notable recent holder of the title of Grand Shade was an old human woman who, in 1494, fell under the control of the aboleth S'gothgah when she was inflicted with a Banesmark. Using her position as Grand Shade, she inflicted Banesmarks on multiple lesser Shades and used the resources of the monastery to provide S'gothgah with information stored in the library on the Feast of Corruption and used the loyal forces of the monastery to sow terror across the northern Sword Coast, including the false flag Attack on the Neverwinter Gala. For a time, S'gothgah was even transported in secret to the monastery's library to solidify his control. The Grand Shade also shut down dissent within the monastery to this new direction, going so far as to imprison and torture the Shade of Luck Brenvark Coldscar.   During this time, the Grand Shade went along with S'gothgah's plans, not struggling against his control in order to find a way to strike back. That opprotunity came when the Heroes of Saltmarsh infiltrated the monastery to learn about S'gothgah's plans and fought the Grand Shade, who killed Lyra, a former student of her monastery, before she was defeated. Before dying, the Grand Shade instructed the party to close all entrances into her chamber, which was lead-lined, and told the Heroes about the Feast of Corruption and the aboleth's desire to spread fear and worry
