Brenvark Coldscar

Shade of Luck Brenvark Coldscar

Brenvark Coldscar was a human monk of the Twilight Monastery and the personal mentor of the Hero of Saltmarsh Lyra.   Though he spent most of his time traveling away from the Monastery, Brenvark was nonetheless the monastery's Shade of Luck and was the sole Shade to resist the corrupting influence of the aboleth S'gothgah until he was fully inflicted with a Banesmark and unintentionally killed in the Styes at the end of 1496.

History

Brenvark was born in 1453 and spent most of his life growing up in service to the Twilight Monastery. Unlike most, who in some form or spirit carried on the will of Mask with their training, Brenvark preferred to travel the northern Sword Coast and use his martial abilities to help people. Despite his frequent excursions, Brenvark became the monastery's Shade of Luck.   One day, Brenvark's travels brought him to Saltmarsh, and his demeanor and abiliites impressed the changelings Pom and Art enough that the two of them entrusted Brenvark with their daughter Tig. Tig had been struggling to gain control over her shapechanging abilities, and her two parents believed that the discipline Brenvark could offer Tig would be invaluable.   Brenvark agreed, and for the next several years he and Tig would travel the Sword Coast and make frequent stops at the Twilight Monastery. Due to Brenvark's unusual teaching methods, due to his frequent travels, and from presumed favoritism, Tig was often ostracized from the monastery's other pupils. However, these frequent travels forged an inseperable bond between master and apprentice.   Following the Great Dragon War and the expulsion of the Sea Princes from Saltmarsh's shores, Tig decided to leave the monastery and return home, hoping to use her newfound skills to protect the settlement. Shortly after, the Twilight Monastery began following under the influence of the aboleth S'gothgah, who managed to ensnare the Grand Shade with a mind-controlling Banesmark. Brenvark, unaware of the source of the corruption but detecting something was off, began acting against the Grand Shade's orders, unwilling to let the monastery's resources be used to sow terror for seemingly no purpose. When a summons was sent out to all members of the monastery to return, Brenvark intercepted Tig's letter and destroyed it, fearing for his apprentice.   Brenvark's stands against the actions of the monastery made him more and more of a pariah, and his freedom of movement was greatly reduced. In Fall of 1496, Brenvark snuck a letter to Tig, telling her not to return to the monastery for any reason. Soon after, the monastery's leadership had enough of Brenvark and imprisoned him in one of the monastery's void prison rooms, a room magically enchanted to appear separate from time and space, and tortured.   Tig, now going by Lyra, arrived to infiltrate the Twilight Monastery alongsidethe other Heroes of Saltmarsh and the Mask in Uktar of 1496, during the monastery's initiation ritual. While the group wanted to learn more about the Banesmark, Lyra was interested in rescuing her master. However, Lyra died during the fight against the Grand Shade and, keeping her cards close to her chest, did not tell the other Heroes about her master. Though Lyra was brought back to life, reincarnated as a human, Brenvark remained trapped.   One month later, as the Heroes of Saltmarsh arrived ever closer to completely disrupting S'gothgah's plans, the aboleth aranged for Brenvark to be given a Banesmark and brought him to his base in the the Styes. While intendeding to use Brenvark as a pawn to force the Heroes cooperation, alongisde scores other innocents inflicted with Banesmarks, including Micah Pierce's younger brother, Brenvark was instead among those killed by a fireball from Necian Arrzen, when the Heroes mistook the robed, mind-controlled cultists for true believers of Bane.
