Mad Maggie is a hag warlord of Avernus based out of Fort Knucklebones.
History
In the mid-15th century, a coven of hags that included Mad Maggie, Red Ruth, and Gaunt Gella moved to Fort Knucklebones in Avernus to take advantage of its Dream Machine. After getting the machine operational, Gella was hooked up to it and Ruth dove inside of her dreams, but whatever Ruth saw horrified her so much she murdered Gella and fled before Maggie could kill her. Now without her coven, Maggie remained in Fort Knucklebones, settling their permenately. She allied the kenku tribe that lived in the fort and recruited a gang of fey Red Caps to serve her, while also constructing the flesh golem Mickey and the flaming skull Barnabas to serve her. Maggie also turned Fort Knucklebones into a refuge in Avernus where all were allowed so long as any and all fighting took place outside of its walls. Thanks to her magic and growing influence, this neutrality was accepted, and more Avernian wanderers came to Fort Knucklebones to run their businesses or relax between raids. Even the devils of Avernus recognized Fort Knucklebones' no fighting policy, finding such an arrangement useful at times. Maggie's time in Avernus also gradually made her more and more interested in its current archduke, Zariel. Fort Knucklebones contained an old, weathered tapestry depicting Zariel's fall after the Charge of the Hellriders, an event not commonly known, and Maggie made it a personal past time to uncover more about the archdevil. In 1497, Fort Knucklebones was visited by the Lost Star Detectives, adventurers who were seeking to undo the Damnation of Elturel. The Detectives arrived at Fort Knucklebones following guidance from Torm and the sporadic memories of their amnesiac hollyphant companion Lulu, who remembered traveling to the fort centuries ago. Torm's guidance was made clear when the Detectives discovered the Dream Machine, which could be used to restore Lulu's memories, helping them to find the lost Sword of Zariel. Maggie also recognized Lulu from the old tapestry of Zariel she owned, and offered to help them operate the machine on two conditions. The first is that the Detectives had to find its four missing components, and the second is that the Detectives consent to letting Maggie view Lulu's memories as well. Katya Sinaran agreed to the deal on behalf of the group, and Maggie also asked them to kill Red Ruth while they were traveling. The Detectives returned to Fort Knucklebones briefly after visiting Bel's Forge but returned in earnest in early 1498, having gathered the necessary parts for the Dream Machine and killed Red Ruth. Maggie and the Detectives then unlocked Lulu's memories, witnessing the formation of her friendship with Zariel, the Charge of the Hellriders, and Lulu's wanderings in Avernus, before the hollyphant remembered the location of Zariel's Sword, and the Detectives raced off to find it.
