The Outer Belt
The Tanit system got its name for its voracious star. In the distant past, interpretations of the goddess Tanit of Carthage in the past included the idea of child sacrifice; and the star tore apart several of its planets, its "children. The first two planets now form the Inner Belt, a "hot" asteroid field held rigorously in place by the gravity of Tanit herself. Past Tanit I and II, separating them from Tanit III and IV, is the Outer Belt. The Outer Belt was formed when one of the planets that formed the Inner Belt blew apart and a large chunk smashed into planet between what are now Tanit II and III. In the modern age, it was the site of numerous battles between the trapped USN, LSL, and FRP fleets after hyperspace was cut off. Now the belt swarms with pirates and Remnants, answering to none save their own codes... if they have them.
Geography
The belt is made up of the remains of a mid sized rocky planet that was struck by the remains of another. The asteroids range from the size of baseballs to being dwarf planets, and mixed in are the derelict remains of dozens if not hundreds of warships.
Natural Resources
The Outer Belt has nearly a literal planet's worth of natural resources. Ores, rare earth elements, weird stuff that needed the unique combination of a planet exploding directly into the vacuum of space to form, ice patches, the Outer belt has it all. It also has many unnatural resources in the form of the hundreds of ancient warships floating in it. These vessels are valuable not just for the bulk salvage, but also for much of the tech and equipment they contain, preserved by hard vacuum or in sealed crates in rooms filled with stale air and radiation.
History
The history of the Outer Belt past its formation is intimately tied to the Great Stellar War. Towards the end of the conflict, forces form all sides poured into the system. The LSL and FRP fleets were there to conquer, subjugate, and establish the system as a last change stronghold against the USN forces that were slowly but surely wining the war. Where Tanit III's moons of Carteia and Barcino became the sites of ground warfare, The USN managed to establish a line of defense for Tanit II in the Outer Belt. The fighting was intense, and eventually the USN forces prevailed. Unfortunately, they were unable to capture all the LSL and FRP personnel or vessels. These became the foundational forces of both ongoing pirate problem in the Outer Belt and the Remnant terrorist group.
The Outer Belt is invaluable as a resource harvesting location, but also intensely dangerous. Pirate attacks are common enough to warrant armed guards on ore haulers and even escorts for passenger vessels. It's an ongoing embarrassment to the TSL, who are under pressure to end the issue.
