Eric Macgregor
Professional Head of the Armed Forces, and Uncle.
Field Marshal Eric Paul Macgregor, KBC, DSO**, DSM, KCVO. (a.k.a. God)
AS the most senior officer of Her Majesty's Armed Forces, Field Marshal Eric Macgregor is the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and the professional head of the Commonwealth's Armed Forces. For several million citizens of the Commonwealth, including Army, Naval and Air force personnel, Eric is the closest thing they are going to find to God.
Eric became CDS in 2975 when, whilst he was serving as the Chief of the Commonwealth General Staff (C2GS), the previous holder, Admiral of the Fleets, Lord Hamilton, retired from the Navy aged 135. Much like Eric's appointment to C2GS at 45, his appointment at a mere 50 years old caused extreme consternation, as it made him the youngest holder for nearly 350 years.
Eric is also the paternal uncle to one Colonel Alastair Macgregor, whom he is older by only 5 years, and over 3 decades younger than his brother, Alastair's father, William.
Despite the five rank difference, the two Macgregors get along swimmingly, helped by Alastair's unusual position as commander of the Queen's Own Anti-Revolutionary Company, until its disbanding in 2980 (Eric is the one that gave Alastair permission to make his new regiment how he saw fit, over the head of the C2GS). Eric's job is to balance the forces; Army, Navy and Air Force, across the Commonwealth, responding to threats as they arrive.
His tenure is marked with the increasing pressure from the Tarquin, and the other human empires.
Always on the move, to be close to trouble spots, Eric has not been on Earth for more than a few weeks in 7 years, history is yet to determine how he will be remembered.

Personal history
On the face of it a 30 year gap between siblings feels unusual, somewhat dirty. But when active life spans have reached 150 and unusual people live to 180ish, 50 is no longer middle aged. And so, the 36 year gap between William Macgregor, born in 2889, and his younger brother, Eric is not all that uncommon.
Julian and Jayantha Macgregor therefore, were a typical family in this regard, having William Macgregor, by accident, at just 19. Their 36 year wait for their next child was due to them working hard on their own careers. Jayantha was an academic of astrodynamics at Oxford university, Magdalene College, and Julian, bucking the trend of his father and grandfather, was a civil servant.
In this light Eric was born, much more English than his parents, who are Scottish and Indian, or his Brother, on Magdalene, Oxford. Like his brother, 30 years before, he showed excellent physical prowess, and on turning 18 he went to the Royal Army College, Sandhurst.
His meteoric rise to the professional head of the army was started when he took control of the 32nd Divison, 9th CAA.
