The Indian War of Independence

Revolution

Sunil Sethi incident

The Indian War of Independence of 2968, was the first full scale rebellion of the 500 year old Commonwealth. It was sparked by the death of the Supersector President, Guptha Jamil. Fed by agitators in the Indian Regiments who felt the Tarquin were a too big a threat to India to allow the Commonwealth to deal with any longer. The death of the President removed the last voice in power that was respected by the army, leading to a military coup. The Mutiny ended when the Leader of the Coup Sunil Sethi was assassinated by members of the 22nd Herefordshire Regiment under the control of the 12th CAA.

By 2965, the Tarquin invasion had reached its Maximum penetration of the Commonwealth, See the Battle of Crossroad 34, leaving the Oceania sector split in two, with the majority of the Australian sectors, New Guinea and Hong Kong-in-exile on the Armward side of the invasion, and the New Zealand Sectors Tipward. If Melbourne Prime had fallen, the Indian sectors would have been next. As could be expected, the fear in the Indian population that their region would be ripped apart next, climbed. Into this fear-ridden supersector, a Retired Major-General, Sunil Sethi, stepped up on to a soapbox and proclaimed he was their saviour. Despite the victory at Melbourne Prime, Sunil successfully whipped the Indians into a frenzy, he campaigned for the return of control of Indian raised military forces to the Indian Government, as well as forming his own political party.
In early 2967, there was the Indian Supersector Presidential election which the General, now calling himself Field Marshal Sunil Sethi, stood as the opposition to the incumbent president, Guptha Jamil. He failed, but in a move that surprised nobody, the local The Ministry of Governmental Excellence officers, declared the vote to be rigged. Despite only being 110, Guptha Jamil was found dead, 3 months after the election, in the presidential home. The MoGE performed the autopsy, declaring that the President was murdered, poisoned using a new gas weapon that had been developed by the 'Field Marshal' before he left the army, to combat the Tarquin. It had failed in that usage, Tarquin biology being a bit too alien for making educated guesses about effects, but the gas did work as a near instantaneous poison for humans. The following finger pointing lead the federal government to take the extreme step of sending in one army division, the 244th Air Assault division, and 2 task groups from 20th fleet, both from 12th CAA as a peacekeeping force, under then Lieutenant-General, Edward 'Ted' Treskow. The Indian response was swift, and on the 31st of December 2967, Sethi waltz'd into the Parliament building and released more of the gas, killing the majority of the legislature. With no-one to stop him taking over as President, he shut down the Supersector border, with what little navy he could form into a picket.   Ted Treskow had been inbound with his one division when this event took place. In a discussion with C2GS General Eric Macgregor, and CDS Admiral of the Fleets, Lord Hamilton, Treskow puffed up his command size by receiving troops from Battalions leaving the Tarquin front, as well as units from the 1st Special Forces Support Group.    By the turn of 2968, the lone Air Assault Division and task groups 20.6 and .14 found themselves in fact 3 divisions big, and a fully fledged task force, TF 206, with the number of reinforcements they had received. One of those units received was 1 battalion's worth of Royal Gloucestershire Light Infantry. Despite having nearly a year of preparation time, the Coup Government was not expecting the ferocity of the attack that TF 206 committed to. The two new HMS Enterprize class carriers, and their Cepheid class Destroyers inflicted massive losses on the Indian Littoral frigates, reopening border.   This cleared the way to the New Golden Triangle Sector, the site of the Government buildings as well as the last known location of the 'Field Marshal', which were blockaded.   Treskow, and Vice Admiral Grant, then suffered from a moment of paralysis. They couldn't insert their divisions as normal, the show of strength would achieve nothing, apart from piss off the locals, and miss most of the sector's planets. The decision was made by Brigadier Davids Lu-tang, commander of 1st SFSG, who recommended inserted irregular troops onto as many different planets in those subsectors as possible, no more than 16 per planet, reinforcing as intel came in.   There weren't nearly enough troops in the SFSG to complete that plan even as spread out as it was. However, Macgregor, and the 6th Divison, Light Infantry Brigade commander, Brigadier James Williamsons had be trying to implement SFSG like activities against the Tarquin, and had the troops trained in how to do it. Brigadier Davids, always glad of support accepted and 1st Company RGLIR became part of 2nd SFSG under Williamsons.
