Originally hailing from strange and distant lands, wandering Tabaxi are catlike humanoids driven by curiosity to collect interesting artifacts, gather tales and stories, and lay eyes on all the world’s wonders. They are generally good natured, but often mischievous and enjoy a good prank or joke. The ultimate travelers and
Adventurers, the inquisitive Tabaxi rarely stay in one place for long. Their innate nature pushes them to leave no secrets uncovered, no treasures or legends lost.
Tabaxi have feline heads, resembling big cats such as panthers and jaguars. Their bodies are covered in fur and posses cat-like hands and feet with retractable claws, as well as tails. Tabaxi fur tends to match the environment they grew up in; those who live in cold environments typically have thicker fur, with grey, white, or black coloration; while those from jungles with have tan and camouflaged patterns. Tabaxi are typically the same height as humans, standing between 5 and 6 ½ feet tall. Most are relatively slender for their size, averaging around 145 pounds. They live a comparable lifespan to humans.
Wandering Outcats
Tabaxi hunt for food, craft goods, and largely keep to themselves content to dwell in small, tight clans which tend to wander and range across distant lands. However, not all Tabaxi are satisfied with such a life. Tabaxi are gifted with curiosity are compelled to wander far and wide. They seek out stories, artifacts, and lore. Those who survive this period of wanderlust return home in their elder years to share news of, and teach their young about the outside world. In this manner, the Tabaxi remain isolated but never ignorant of the world beyond their home. While seldom devout followers of any real pantheon, Tabaxi do tend to find some affinity for the gods
Avandra,
Ioun, and
Cegorach.
Barterers of Lore
Tabaxi treasure knowledge rather than material things. A chest filled with gold coins is not intrinsically interesting or valuable, but it is useful to buy food, a coil of rope, or fund further ventures to discover interesting tales or things. Instead, Tabaxi value knowledge, new experiences and interesting stories. Their ears perk up in a busy tavern, and they tease out stories with offers of food, drink, and coin. Tabaxi might walk away with empty purses, but they mull over the stories and rumors they collected like a miser counting coins. Although material wealth holds little attraction for the Tabaxi, they have an insatiable desire to find and inspect ancient relics, magical items, and other rare objects which come along with an interesting story. Aside from the power such items might confer, a Tabaxi takes great joy in unraveling the stories behind their creation and the history of their use. Even a magic sword, is just a means to a more interesting end if there isn't a story attached to the blade. While in their travels around the world, Tabaxi make natural friends with
Tortles who also spend their lives traveling in search of knowledge. They also often share kinship with
Half-Elves in their love of adventure and traveling into the unknown. They also make ideal members of the
Askari Watchers in both their drive for knowledge and desire to uncover lost information.
