Penrath
Penrath is the capital city of the Republic of Auster. It is located on the end of the Virsat Narrows, north of the Wulsbahn Mountains. It has proclaimed itself the largest city on the continent of Eloqua, but the city of Aramore in the neighboring Kingdom of Luria has made the same claim.
Description
The city of Penrath is built atop the highest point of the Virsat Narrows, a fjord in the chill northern reaches of Eloqua. Thanks to this placement, its residents are alternately blessed with breathtaking vistas during times of good weather and plagued by thick mists when the weather is poor. Nevertheless, the lush green fields which surround Penrath give one an honest impression of the prosperity of the city. Its exterior defensive wall stands at roughly 40 feet high, and is built primarily out of brick and mortar of various sizes and colors. There are three major gates into the city, though each takes visitors through the business district before the main roads branch off into the residential areas of Penrath. The structure of its districts is similar to the concentric rings of a growing tree, with the castle at its center built out of a large slab of natural rock (the castle thus sits above the rest of the city). The architecture of Penrath is generally the same throughout the city: buildings take on a layered appearance, with multiple floors and "stacked" wings in either rectangular or semi-circular shapes. This layering is echoed in the smaller details on buildings as well. Most of the non-residential buildings feature one or two round towers with large, arched windows which permit a good view of the city. Brick is the most common building material, with lime coming in a close second.The Outer Stadtteil
Penrath's business district. It is the narrowest of the "rings" which comprise the city, wedged between the defensive wall and the residential district. Despite being built on lower ground than the residential district, it appears higher up when viewed from further into the city because its buildings are generally taller than most residences in Penrath. Despite being described as the business district, it is also where the city's temples and schools are found.The Inner Stadtteil
The residential district, which comprises most of Penrath and surrounds the palace grounds at a slight distance. The Inner Stadtteil is broken into four sub-districts: Buchtseite, Meerseite, Birkenseite, and Feldseite. Each district recieves a separate pool of funding to use on civil works and social programs for their residents. In addition, the district one lives in determines which school their children attend and which social clubs they are permitted to take part of.The Royal Stadtteil
At the very center of Penrath, built out of the natural stone hill which the city now surrounds, is Valkenkreit Castle. As it is built directly out of the rock formation which was already here, Valkenkreit Castle has a rather irregular shape and is somewhat jagged-looking in places. A curtain wall, about half the size of the city's outer defensive wall, encloses the castle grounds. This marks the border of the castle district, which retained its royal moniker even after Auster transitioned from an empire to a republic.
