The Unclaimed Lands
Chaotic and Dangerous
The Unclaimed Lands is an occupied area on the east coast of Utican. There is no unifying government in the Unclaimed Lands. Instead, the region is populated by many autonomous communities that range from small hamlets to large city states. The lack of unifying cultures within the Unclaimed Lands has resulted in the region maintaining the names given by the Hellena Empire when they landed in Utican. The Unclaimed Lands are divided into the following Regions;
- Eresus Lowlands: Southeastern coastal lowlands famed for being the original landing area of the Hellenistic expeditionary force in Utican.
- The Free Hills: Inland region of the Unclaimed Lands. Contains a number of independent small villages that often war with one another.
- Kato Plains: The most western portion of the Unclaimed Lands. The plains are extremely fertile and home to New Prolis, the largest city state in the Unclaimed Lands.
- Malles Jungles: A treacherous jungle in the northern portion of the Unclaimed Lands. The islands north of the Malles Jungle are rumored to be cursed by the ancestors of the original inhabitants.
- Saelphiranos: The northeastern region of the Unclaimed Lands. Saelphiranos has only recently gained this name, in honor of the Empress Saelphira Dawn, from occupying Capsan forces.
Geography
The Unclaimed Lands is dominated by thick forests and jungles. There are a number of small mountains that are dwarfed by The Kyrr and Celestial Mountains in central and northwestern Utican. There are a number of waterways that flow through the Unclaimed Lands, particularly in the Eresus Lowlands.
Climate
The Unclaimed Lands have a temperate climate. However, the entire coastal region is often impacted by hurricanes and heavy rains. The climate becomes dryer in the western regions.
History
The Unclaimed Lands was the first region entered by the Hellena Empire's expeditionary force to Utican. The Hellena Empire quickly conquered the disunified peoples of the Unclaimed Lands and used the rich natural resources of the land to make inroads further into Utican. After the initial conquest, the Hellenistic forces built a city in the western plains. When Hellena begin to withdraw from Utican, many of the forces within the Unclaimed Lands also left. This withdrawal led to mass anarchy and the Hellena settlements either burned in regional conflicts or deteriorated from neglect. Unlike the other regions of Utican, the Unclaimed Lands did not have a unifying culture or dominant ancestry that led to a larger unified nation state. To this day the Unclaimed Lands continue to be dominated by a multitude of villages and cities that often find themselves in conflict with one another as they emphasize their differences rather than their commonalities.
Tourism
Travel through the Unclaimed Lands is dangerous and discourages many travelers from risking the journey. There have been numerous attempts throughout the history of the Unclaimed Lands to build roads and secure trade routes, but these efforts are often stiffled by endemic conflict, monsters, and natural obstacles.
