Utican (Yu-Tee-Cahn)
Introduction:
Utican is a vast land of green forests, golden deserts, green plains, and snow capped mountains. Utican is a land of fierce independence, long cultural memories, and strong traditions. The continent is dominated by the Orc Domain in the north, the Leonin Anthera Grasslands in the southwest, and New Hellena in the southwest. But between these three states there exist the independent city states of the Unclaimed Lands, the theocratic Federation of Odion, the pirate ports of Exgilios, the war torn Shifting Badlands, and the Elven Kingdom of Onarion. The people of Utican look to forge new paths while respecting the past and honoring those that came before them.Geography:
Utican's northern regions are dominated by dense forests and tall mountains. The tallest mountain, Celestial Mountain, lies in the northeast. The north also contains the Abbas Wastes, one of Utican's two deserts. The southern portion of the continent is split between the Shifting Badlands, the second desert in Utican, and the rolling plains known as the Anthera Grasslands. In the center of the continent sits Kyrr Mountain, a mountain sacred to the Gold Dwarves of Utican. Several major rivers flow through Utican, however most of the riverlands and wet lands are located in the east in the Unclaimed Lands.Nations and States:
- Anthera Grasslands: The home of the Leonin people known as the Anthera Pride. Anthera is a land of pastoralist ranchers who guide their herds across the vast open plains. The larger cities are places of trade and cultural exchange as many flee from the centaurs in the Shifting Badlands and search for safe harbors from the pirates of Exgilios.
- Bhaalis: The fledgling nation in Utican. Bhaalis is not officially recognized by any other kingdom but it is the name of the fledgling state controlled by the centaur marauders of the Bhaalic Horde.
- Exgilios: A nation of pirates, bandits, and theives. While most people who live in Exgilios are good hard working folks, the ports that dominate the coast are ruled by vicious pirate lords. As you move into the mountains travelers must contend with the territorial mountain clans. For all of its flaws, Exgilios is a land where an adventurer could find great wealth and maybe even rise to become a pirate lord.
- Federation of Odion: The theocratic state of the Odion humans of the Abbas Waste. The Federation is comprised of five great temples and their surrounding cities. While the Federation is predominantly inhabited by Odion humans, there have been an increase in immigration from Orcs, Dwarves, Leonin, and other ancestries in recent years.
- New Hellena: A mysterious city state that dominates southeast Utican. New Hellena is known to be inhospitable to outsiders and foreigners. Moreover the New Hellenan's believe themselves to be the heirs of Hellena and thus the choosen to revive the greatest empire Thinia has ever seen.
- New Polis: A city state in the Unclaimed Lands in eastern Utican. New Polis prides itself as a city founded by the Hellenistic forces during the conquest of Utican. New Polis is a free city where every citizen has a say in the government. Despite its small size compared to the other states, New Polis is a influential player in the politics of Utican.
- Orc Domain: The most infleuntial state in Utican. The Orc Domain was founded by a number of Orish noble families that remained in Utican while the Hellenistic forces withdrew. These Orc Nobles would form nine kingdoms ruled by nine seperate Orc noble families. At various times the Orc Domain has been untied by a ruler known as the Archon. But there has not been an Archon in about two hundred years. Instead the Orc Nobles scheme, plot, and war with one another to claim the title of Archon.
- Saelphiron: The youngest state in Utican. Saelphiron is a newly formed state that intends to be a client state of the Capsan Empire and serve as an outpost for further Capsan influence in Utican. Saelphiron was recently formed by Capsan loyalists and is still struggling to find its place within the Unclaimed Lands and Utican.
