The Grand Abbey

Purpose / Function

The Chapter House of the Order and the residence of the Holy Mother of the Order.

Architecture

The Abbey was built in two distinct stages.  The first and older building is the Great Nave.  It is 90' tall at the peak of its roof, and the adjoining bell tower is 130' tall.  Both the nave and the tower are made of a distinct golden-hued granite that makes them stand out to the eye.  The second phase of contruction brought the great Entrance Hall, the Hall of Canons, and the Cloister Square (amongst other buildings).  All of these later structures are made of a pale gray, finely finished limestone.  The Hall of Canons is roofed in a blue slate that reflects the Order's traditional blue color scheme.
