The Roaring Sailor

The Roaring Sailor is an inn located on the riverfront section of the Low Town district of Len Doa. It is a popular establishment and is considered one of the finer inns in the neighborhood. This is most surprising, since it is located in one of the roughest sections of the neighborhood.   The Sailor is owned and operated by Urian Waters, a 65-year-old Human and a veteran of the district. He offers a safe place to rest, eat and drink... and not much else. There are a few dicing tables running on any given night of the month, but no whores, fighting or fencing of goods is allowed.

Purpose / Function

The Roaring Sailor offers a safe place to rest, eat and drink.

Sensory & Appearance

The common room at the Sailor is a large, high-ceilinged room with plastered walls and a worn wooden floor.  Lanterns hang from the ceiling, lighting the room day and night.  A hearth is located near the entrance and is constantly lit during the cold winter.

Denizens

A lively, nautical crowd can be found at the Sailor on any night.  Urian allows no fighting or unsavory behavior from his guests, and he employs two very large and capable bouncers to help him manage his more unruly patrons.  There are two dicing tables at the far end of the room, open and running as soon as the dinner crowd has thinned out.  Both tables are run by Urian's staff, and are strictly cash-only games.  No credit is permitted.

Contents & Furnishings

The guest rooms are small, low-ceilinged accommodations with either one large bed or three small beds per room.  A small side table is in each room, as is a chair or stool.  No other furnishings are provided.

Valuables

Aside from the cash found on the dicing table, Urian keeps his house funds and personal money in a large, iron-bound chest that is hidden in a locked oak cupboard.  He wears the keys for this chest and cupboard around his neck, and never takes it off.

Architecture

The inn is a tall and narrow three-story building of stone and wood construction.  There are no windows on the first floor, and only shuttered openings on the floors above.  A large common rooms is furnished with trestle tables and benches for feeding large crowds.  The rooms are small, clean and lit with a single bright oil lamp.

History

Urian built the inn during the final days of construction on this last section of the city walls.  He has invested his entire life into the inn, and is careful to try and keep the more dangerous and criminal elements of the neighborhood out of his establishment.

Tourism

The Sailor can accommodate up to 45 people at one time for eating and drinking, and has 18 rooms available to let. There are no stables, and no bathhouse (although a tub and hot water can be arranged for a fee).   The Inn offers beer, cheap wine, a fine stout and Ury's own grog.  The grog is a mixture of pure rum spirits, water, sugar and fruit juice that he bottles in 2 pint crock jugs.  Its most famous offering is Ury's great sea pies.  These are huge pies made of layers of dough, meat, cabbage, seasoning and butter which is slow baked to a bubbly, golden brown masterpiece that people come from far and wide to enjoy.  With each huge pie (easily able to feed 2 hungry sailors) costing 9p and each grog crock costing only another 9p, it is the cheapest great meal in the duchy.
