Vernam Older is the Lord Lord Chancellor of Lesser Imesse. He is a 46-year-old Human that has known the King, Mak II, since childhood. Vernam's father, Werner Older, is a knight and was one of Mak's personal guards when he was young. Vernam and Mak trained together under the tutelage of Werner, and both learned to excel at swordsmanship and melee fighting.
When Mak became King Mak II of Lesser Imesse in 209 AF, it became known that his father's Lord Chancellor had been deeply in debt to Duke Turl am Nari and was engulfed in much corruption and graft in an attempt to rid himself of the debt. After only 8 months on the throne, Mak had the man arrested and tried for High Crimes against the Kingdom. He was found guilty and beheaded, and Mak was sure he wanted his long-time friend and commrade Vernam to take the job. Vernam asked to not be considered, as he was sincerely doubtful he was up to such an improtant and demanding office. Mak finally persuaded him, and Vernam surrounded himself with the smartest and most educated people he knew to help him succeed at his new post.

One of the people that Vernam appointed to assist him in his duties is Marian Tanner, a woman he has known since his childhood that has an amazing ability to handle numbers, ledgers and arithmetic of all types and complexities. He has come to depend on her abilities and skills, and often fights the urge to get closer to Marian. If pressed, he will deny any attraction to the woman, no matter how obvious it is to the rest of the world.
