Imessian (Im-sian)

Imessian is the ethnicity of Imesse, a Kingdom at the mouth of the Caldar River. Imesse is united by a common language and a dynamic societal structure. One kingdom divided between two kings, ruling over more than one million souls.   The primary language of the culture is Caldarian but significant numbers of people speak other tongues, including Colian and Arian.  The largest religion practiced is by the followers of the Pantheon of Heaven but there are many followers of the Druidic Faith (especially amongst the Halflings) and the Maranonic Faith (mainly in the north).

Naming Traditions

Feminine names

Women adopt their husband's family name when married, but can pass on family associations to their children.

Family names

Family names, especially noble family names, are designated with the prefix "am" when applied to men, without when applied to women.  This is a convention that became wide-spread after the Ohnni Conquest of the Kingdom, as it originated in the Lothian capital of Southridge.  Noble houses that predate the conquest, especially in the north and west, do not (as a rule) follow this convention uniformly.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The majority of Imessians speak Caldarian (locally referred to as "Common"), but it is not uncommon for other languages to be used in large cities or ports.  Fangorian is commonly heard used in port cities, and Colian is heard close to the northern border.
